I look at the studies as conditional. In rodents, you expose them to saccharin this way, you get this effect, that way, that effect. Just add saccharin to a new chow, they'll get fat. Pre-expose to either the chow the saccharin's going to be added to, or the saccharin without the chow, it's not so fattening when the two are given together. Diet pop taken with a meal, or diet pop taken only apart from meals? When I was a teenager my go-to on the way home from school was a plain poppyseed bagel washed down with diet coke. I don't think I would have been so enthusiastic about that bagel without the diet coke.
