Question Heart rate at rest??

I often find myself checking out my blood pressure in a grocery store (or any other store) and most of those machines also happen to give a heart rate reading.

My heart rate recently (ever since I started low-carbs plus consistant exercise) has been significantly higher than usual - I'm about 80-90 at rest. Does anyone know much about heart rate at rest? Is it bad if its too high up? Does it imply a reving metabolism or am I just wishing here?

Nike, any chance that you've been testing after having something with caffeine? Stimulants, like caffeine, will raise your blood pressure and your heart rate.

Have you checked your rising heart rate? This will be when your heart rate is at it's lowest - your true resting rate. I have never heard of LCing raising heart rate. I can tell you from experience that when I use those machines I get an average heart rate of 68 beats per minute, whereas my rising heart rate is 61.

I have actually been trying to read up on this. My heart rate used to be pretty low as well (not like I tested RIGHT before starting LC). That's why it jumped out at me when I tested recently to get a range of 80-90. My blood pressure is great though.

I do have to say that all these readings (3 so far) were done in the evening and each time I had worked out not too long before that, so I don't know if that possibly caused it.

Overall I feel great. Unless having a heart-rate reading that high is unhealthy I don't mind it. In general other differenced I've noticed is that I tend to be cold most of the time (especially feet/hands) and that has not happened to be at all. I feel alert, not sluggish and "ready to go!"

Still I did read some place that a higher resting heart rate could indicate that you are getting ill or overtraining - none of which I hope is happening to me. I do low impact cardio for 40 minutes a day (this 40 minutes includes warm-up etc) so would not call that overtraining... certainly hope its not about me getting ill - I definitely don't feel like it

Any chance that u were walking (fast) just b4 u used those machines? That would most certainly make your heart beat faster......

It's so funny that this topic came up....

My resting heartrate has been pretty low for years due to working out quite a bit... It would stay under 50... usually around 48(taken first thing in the am before getting out of bed). It had been a while since I had checked it, and I hadn't checked it at all since starting LC in January. So, the other morning I remembered to check it before I got out of bed and it was 55. I checked it again just to be sure! I have started taking Hydroxycut, though, so I wonder if it is because of that. I only take 2 a day and I never take any in the afternoon or evening and I don't take it at all on the weekends. I've also increased my workout with weights. I am assuming the change is from the Hydroxycut since it has caffeine. I am going to try to remember to take it again Monday morning when I have been off of it for 2 days and see if it is any different.


Try taking yours first thing before you get out of bed.... You'll need a clock or something to time yourself with for one minute. Find your heart beat... I do mine on my neck since that is where it is usually the easiest to feel, but you can also use your wrist. Time it for 1 minute and you'll have your resting heart rate.

Thanks for the replies - I will try doing it first thing int he morning as suggested. Two nights ago (about 2 hours after exercising) it was at 87! My whole body feels pretty warm too - I don't know if that's related. But I feel great though!

I am shocked to read that LCing would raise someone's pulse rate and/or blood pressure. I thought LCing always made improvements in readings.

I had high-normal blood pressure and a slightly higher pulse rate when I was at my maximum weight in 1999; say, 155/95 at 75 pulse resting.

Since June 1999 my LC blood pressure has returned to normal and my pulse rate has dropped. I also reduced table salt and switched to Morton's Salt Substitute, potassium chloride. I have now reintroduced table salt and also use the potassium chloride salt with blood pressure remaining normal.

My blood pressure after getting up in the mornning has been in the 115/70 range at 55 to 58 pulse rate. I take an aggressive 4.6 mile bike ride in 22 minutes several times a week with a 1.5 mile uphill stretch. My pulse will drop to 80 to 90 by the time I put the bike away. My pulse rate while hiking the mountain aggressive seems to plateau at about 120.

My highest blood pressure occurs when rushing around to get something done but not doing aerobic exercise. This seems reasonable since the body is getting the adrenalin rush with no follow through.

The aim of Hydroxycut is to raise blood pressure and heart rate - I'd put my money on your assumption being correct

I was at the store today where they have one of the blood pressure machines by the pharmacy... So I tried it just for the heck of it to see what my heart rate showed after walking around doing my shopping. It was 75, which is about what it normally is whenever I have checked on one of those machines in the past. (No Hydroxycut today).

I often feel "warm" since increasing the weight workout. Even on the weekends when I don't take Hydroxycut, I feel warmer than I use to... I always tended to get cold easily, but now I kick the covers off at night a lot of times. I just smile to myself that the "new" muscles I'm finding are burning off the fat and that is what is making me warm! lol...
