Default The 2015 Dietary Advisory Committee Report: A Summary

This is by Adele Hite, and it's a riot!

Quote:
Dear America,

You are sick–and fat. And it’s all your fault.

Face it. You screwed up. Somewhere in the past few decades, you started eating too much food. Too much BAD food. We don’t know why. We think it is because you are stupid.

We don’t know why you are stupid.

And it just goes on from there. By the time she got to the summary of what we SHOULD eat, I was crying from laughing so hard.

Sadly... it's true.

ARRGGGH!! How do I send this link to everyone I know?

Actually, this morning, a good friend reported that he spent the weekend in the hospital because of "ischemic" seizures. Guess what they want him to do? Cut out salt and eat low fat. This kicks off the contrarian in me, and I'm going to organize a "low-carb" educational campaign for him and his wife. I want to save his life! I would send him this essay, except the humor is only clear to those of us who have nurtured our low-carbness long enough to know how well it works.

Adele has posted her testimony reading a version of that letter. Now is the time to add your comments for the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee...futile...but she believes it would still be valuable:

A comment from her on another post:

It should be noted that with regard to experimental evidence, no clinical trial testing a hypothesis generated by one of these Harvard studies relating a food component to a chronic disease has ever shown that the hypothesis is in fact valid. Zero. So, you understand why I’m moving to a program with a more rigorous methodology. That’s right, I’m switching from Nutrition Epidemiology to a PhD in Random Speculation, with a focus in Wild Guessing.

We will establish a Food Czar to run the Office of Dietary Wisdom, because nothing says “America, home of freedom and democracy” like the title of a 19th century Russian monarch.*

Yeah that made me laugh out loud! She credited the line to someone else at the end. So perfect though.

I left a comment on the website, telling my story, but I doubt it will get published because I'm cranky today and ended up telling them they should be ashamed of themselves for the harm they have done with their wrong information for decades. I think I said something about them taking the word of lobbyists, politician puppets and unethical scientists too. Oh well, sometimes you've just gotta tell it like you see it - and be dismissed as a nutcase I suppose. But in their hearts they know I'm right

I must be humor-impaired today. The Hite summary simply struck me as plain-spoken, not funny. The accusations of being stupid are really in the report (I skimmed the summary), though implicit.

Hey, if I can wear pantyhose for 6 hours straight in order to look presentable at this meeting, the least you can do is go fill out a form. You can do that in your pajamas.
