Low-carbohydrate diet reduced inflammation in study

Quote:
A low-carbohydrate diet, but not a low-fat diet, reduces inflammation in patients with type 2 diabetes, according to research at Linköping University in Sweden.

It is known that patients with type 2 diabetes have higher levels of inflammation than those who do not have the disease, and it is believed that this may contribute to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and other complications. In a clinical trial at Linköping University a low-carbohydrate diet was compared with a traditional low-fat diet in 61 patients with type 2 diabetes. Only patients in the low-carbohydrate group exhibited reduced levels of inflammatory markers in blood, despite the fact that weight loss was similar in both groups.

Good news in this article really, but I was annoyed by the expression "traditional low fat diet". Yeah, dry toast, carrot sticks, and low fat yogurt is the traditional human diet. They used that expression not once, but twice in the article. Ticks me off.

The study though, shows that even people who didn't lose much weight still reduced inflammation in their bodies, which should be very good for their overall health. Further confirmation that this is a good way to eat, regardless of weight loss.

The article didn't mention arthritis, so I wonder if the reduced inflammation also helps RA. My sister has RA and is not diabetic (yet - but considering family history it's a risk for her). It seems that inflammation should be the same, whether it affects the heart or RA. So the cure should be the same too - LC diet.

I can not contribute "medically" but I can say that since I got back to this WOE/WOL I'm back in my 6.5 shoes and I don't hurt like I did. My mom has RA and while I have yet to be tested, there's definitely some arthritis in my old bod! Eating this way has made me feel like a new person...weight loss has just been a very pleasant side effect!!
