Default Overactive Bladder? Maybe blame gluten.

Those constant drug commercials for overactive bladder made me research a bit, and I ran across this blog post from a year ago:

Quote:
Once I started my gluten-free diet, I started having extreme difficulty with hesitancy and sometimes not being able to urinate at all. I ended up with a bladder infection and was sent home with an antibiotic. Half way through the week-long course of the antibiotic, I was still experiencing quite a bit of hesitancy and not being able to void completely. My assumption is this is what caused the bladder infection in the first place. So I stopped my prescription medication for my overactive bladder and within a couple days I noticed a big change and lack of difficulty. This is what brought me to research whether food intolerance can lead to bladder symptoms. There is not a lot of information out there; although, there are several studies evaluating patients that had similar symptoms to myself that reported a gluten free diet helpful if not being diagnosed with celiac disease.

Gee, gluten. Is there no health area it doesn't undermine?

Dr. Davis is always talking about people being incontinent on gluten.

I don't have all the urinary difficulties I used to have. I always assumed it was simply weight loss that fixed it, but perhaps dumping the gluten is playing a role. Interesting stuff, especially when there are boatloads of commercials for bladder medications and devices/products.

Very true; it would seem that the "overactive bladder" could be a first sign?

Gee, that alone would put a whole new outlook on that slice of "treat" doesn't it? Knowing that a series of cupcakes would wind up making you wear diapers... gotta give a person pause.

It puts into question the whole "getting old" thing. Maybe we're not getting old, maybe we're just getting sick.

what great timing!!!!
i was just thinking about this, last night.
i was one of those with a "small bladder."
since being GF, that's all changed.. and i was thinking about this last night and wondering if it was because of going GF that i am no longer running to the bathroom, all the time...
i have seen a tremendous difference in my constant having to go to the bathroom, verses being able to hold it for hours and hours..

wow! talk about timing!!!

In my opinion, nope. The stuff is evil. Over on the celiac forums there are lists of totally random things that went away. I've noticed the bladder thing too. Plus, I used to be insanely thirsty, all the time, and that went away when I went gluten free (I wasn't diabetic and carb levels didn't affect me, it was specifically gluten)

I have Interstitial cystitis, which involves an overactive bladder component. I don't really see a difference whether I eat gluten or not, but one thing that provokes an instant reaction every time is soy.
