Ugh. I couldn't imagine doing that to lose weight.

Also, I don't understand why brides-to-be don't just get a dress that fits in the first place. I'd rather look nice in a dress that fits comfortably than worry about squeezing into something too small that will amplify every bulge.

Now, loosing weight in order to be healthier, with the intention to keep it off through proper WOE is a whole different story.

Or you could just eat low carb! The diet described is 800 calories and zero carbs. The doctor says people aren't hungry on it. Sounds familiar, except for the tube and the low-cal!

I read about this a few months ago...I think it started in Italy and it's a big trend there. Looks like it had now made it to the states.

The program has dieters inserting a feeding tube into their nose that runs to the stomach. They're fed a constant slow drip of protein and fat, mixed with water, which contains zero carbohydrates and totals 800 calories a day. Body fat is burned off through a process called ketosis, which leaves muscle intact, Dr. Oliver Di Pietro of Bay Harbor Islands, Fla., said.

"It is a hunger-free, effective way of dieting," Di Pietro said. "Within a few hours and your hunger and appetite go away completely, so patients are actually not hungry at all for the whole 10 days. That's what is so amazing about this diet."

I wish this wasn't the way the mainstream world is going to learn about ketosis. It just seems like another way to make it more "radical."

If only people would listen and learn that they can get into ketosis naturally, by actually eating. sigh

no it's a way to make $$ on a free idea.

Why do something for free when you can spend thousands on the same thing :P

More like "why work hard to lose weight and learn better eating habits when you can pay someone to stick a tube up your nose for a few weeks?"

Hmm... Let's see, we could write a book telling people how to eat a ketogenic diet and charge, say, $40 a pop, and make a reasonable amount of dosh.

Nah, inserting a nasogastric tube for $1500 will work so much better.

Amen! When I look across the table and see how much weight my friend who's on Weightwatchers has gained and I hear about all the meds the other one is on for his diabetes, I want to scream. They watch me push the bread basket away and say "oh, that's right-you poor thing, you can't have bread. Are you still doing that Atkins thing?"

Yup! me too! Thanks for saying it!

As for the subject of this thread, doctors will do anyting for money these days and this 'feeding tube' just pathetic to me.

Yes! I posted about this in my journal last week - here's some of what I wrote:

I wish people at work would get the clue. I see so much I want to just scream "nooooooooooooooooo!" at. For example: yesterday, we celebrated a promotion in our office. We had a "movie" themed party. There was popcorn, junior mints, licorice and ju ju bees. There was sparkling apple cider in little plastic champagne glasses.

Hold. Did you know licorice is made of wheat?! How did I not know this?

Later, I went to get my lunch out of the fridge. Here's what I see: bottles of "fat-free" raspberry and ranch dressings. Non-fat (sugary) yogurt, soda, subway sandwiches, nesquick chocolate milk. The freezer is packed with boxes of weight watchers and lean cuisine frozen meals.

sigh.

I see some eggs in there! Oh, wait. Those are mine.

These poor people have no clue! I want to give them a clue. I've tried a few times, but it falls on deaf ears mostly.

double sigh.

After reading Taubes I felt almost like a UFO Conspiracy Theorist(tm). Like there is just so much information that almost nobody knows about except this group of people "on the internet" LOL.
