Default Dr. Eades:Are we meat eaters or vegetarians? Part III

http://www.proteinpower.com/drmike/...rians-part-iii/

It's pretty long so here's just a snippet:
Quote:
Now, it seems, many who have taken to the Paleo diet have started to drift from the Paleo-is-basically-low-carb paradigm into the Paleo-is-anything-that-isn’t-Neolithic paradigm. And although Neolithic man grew all sorts of crops, most Paleo dieters consider only grains to be truly Neolithic foods. Some Paleo dieters take it a step further and argue that since pre-agricultural man couldn’t have domesticated animals (other than perhaps canids of some sort), then he couldn’t have eaten dairy products. So, those Paleo purists avoid grain and dairy products. Both the dairy and non-dairy Paleo dieters, however, are starting to include larger amounts of carbohydrates – primarily starch – into their diets on the presumption that Paleo man would have eaten it.

I think the evidence that researchers are using — a single isotope in very old, degraded bones — is a slim basis for making the sweeping conclusion that the researchers and Eades makes. I would like to read some of the peer critiques of this research before coming to the conclusions that most of what our forebearers in Europe ate was meat.

Here's one found in China, near the Pacific coast: http://www.pnas.org/content/106/27/10971.full

This graph reinforces my reservations. Just one set of human remains cannot represent a population.

Was it in Omnivore's Dilemma or Guns, Germs and Steel where isotopes would show us to be "people of corn". Virtually everything we eat either eats corn or is corn.

The hypothesis predicts that paleolithic humans skeletons will have a carbon and nitrogen ratio representative of carnivores. It's not just one set of human remains, it's one more set of human remains...that confirms the prediction.
