CVS and amnio (amniocentesis) are procedures used to diagnose such issues as downs syndrom and other defects before birth. Neither is typically performed unless specifically requested by the mother; they could potentially be recommended if there are other risk factors that show up during regular screening (non-diagnostic) tests such as ultrasounds and blood tests. They aren't automatically performed because they each carry a small risk of causing miscarriage.

This has been a very informative thread. I don't have children yet but they are on the horizon in the next couple of years. I plan to eat low carb during pregnancy for sure. 10 years ago in my early 20s I did get pregnant and ended up losing my baby at 6m along. I was nauseous 24 hours a day from about 6 weeks right up until the day of the miscarriage. I was miserable and that experience has made me dread being pregnant again. Maybe on a low carb diet during pregnancy it will be different. I sure hope so!

First and foremost, I'm so sorry you had to go through that.

Second, I know many women who have very different experiences from one pregnancy to the next, even without dietary changes, so don't wste any energy worrying about how it will be to be pregnant because you never know how THAT pregnancy will be until it happens!
