Default SODIUM QUESTION

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH SODIUM? DOES THE TYPICAL AMERICAN DIET
EXCEED THIS LEVEL. WHAT COMPLICATIONS WOULD COME FROM AN
EXCESS OF SODIUM?

Human kindeys have a tremendous capacity for dumping excess
potassium and excess sodium.

Only 1/3 of the human population is sensitive to sodium
(meaning that even with normal kidney function, sodium can be
retained if it gets too high in the diet).

2.5 grams per day is the level that sodium sensitive people
have to stay under.

If sodium is retained, blood pressure will increase and fluid
will accumulate in the lower extremities.

Unless I show up having high blood pressure one day this is
one thing I'm just not going to worry about. Well actually
sometimes I do, if I'm out dancing for 8 hours at a rave (I
don't need drugs for this and sweating alot I make sure I
get extra salt, same goes for burning man.

Why worry? Electrolyte loss can be nasty. Either you start
puking up water, or you absorb it and get brain inflamation, I
believe you may also fail to sweat properly (?).

Probably because they don't realize that all UPPERCASE is
considered shouting.

I would assume that the today's typical American diet has too
much sodium. But I don't have the hard facts. Some of these
modern foods/meals probably blow away and entire day's worth
of sodium.

If you had high blood pressure, a high sodium diet might
cause you problems. I'll let someone with more expertise
answer your question.
