Exercise not likely to rev up your metabolism

Start exercising and you’ll become a round-the-clock, fat-burning machine, right? That’s long been a commonly held belief among exercisers and fitness experts alike. But a new report finds that, sadly, it’s not very likely.

While it’s true that a pound of muscle burns more calories than a pound of fat — about seven to 10 calories a day versus two calories — most people don’t put on enough muscle to make much of a difference.

Man, there are so many sites claiming it's like 30-40 calories an hour and so on.

This study sets up straw men, and then demolishes them. Does anyone want details? Actually once you get to page two of the article it is better balanced. It is simply not true that you cannot add enough muscle to make a difference in your metabolism. In my 60s I lost 25-30 pounds of fat, and added almost that much muscle. A temporary disability slowed down my exercise, and I did add some fat back. I like Gary Taubes' books and writings, but I do not think he has it quite right on exercise. But no disagreement you can ALWAYS outeat any exercise - diet is essential.
