It seems the lower carb I go the more fat I have to eat to feel decent - which is really hard to do without dairy or coconut stuff.

Exactly how I felt. I feel better overall incorporating coconut in to my diet. After my Tokelau Diet experiment, The benefits were so obvious, I will continue to always use it.

Hi Suzanne -

it's possible it's just me or happened for some other reason, but I had symptoms of low magnesium on VLC eating a lot of cheese (well, about 4-5oz most days) in addition to lots of meat. I felt better taking magnesium - but I had to distance it from the cheese to get the desired effect. I guess children might need more calcium anyway - but then that defeats the whole idea behind low-carb (that you don't need extra calcium in addition to the meat).

What are the symptoms of low magnesium?
Now that I think about it, I guess Andrew really does not eat a lot of cheese, it just seems like a lot to me cause I eat none. Yesterday, he had one serving of mozarella. I guess he really only has one or two serving a day and he is only 5, so a serving size is probably around 2 oz.

Muscle cramps, palpitations, irritability, fatigue, dizziness, sleeping problems, anxiety, depression, chemical sensitivities - there's loads!

Cheese shouldn't be so much of a problem on a mixed diet as there's magnesium in vegetables/nuts etc, but an an all meat diet that doesn't contain lots of fish it's harder to get enough. However it's the balance that matters - it appears meat doesn't have much magnesium, but neither does it have much calcium either - the ratio between the two is important. Also I think it's possible that a no-carb diet spares magnesium - but then it depends what else (like cheese) you're doing - caffeine, alcohol etc deplete magnesium.

This is one of the reasons I found it hard doing true zero carb - for me I would have to give up all those things in order for it to properly work for me.

I had all those symptoms when I did the initial induction on Atkins and it lasted a few months, I had a really tough induction. When I dropped eggs and cheese I has some symptoms, but nothing too bad. How long were you trying zero carb?

I did VLC (about 5g carbs) for about a year - or actually I think it was a bit more. Before that I fluctuated depending on veggies/nuts - never more than about 30g. I could never seem to give up dairy or salt - which didn't exactly set me up for success!

I never had the induction problems, or cravings - I just ate a lot of fat and calories and naturally ate a bit lower protein. But that didn't really work for weight loss for me. Maybe I lost a bit of fat - not sure.

One thing is for sure - no matter what diet I've done in the past I always need more magnesium - but it seems to be especially so on VLC or if I eat a lot of cheese. I think if you do eat a lot of seafood and ditch dairy you could get by for magnesium but it sure looks like a lot of work and way too much protein (for me anyway - I know you do really well on lots of protein).

I'm skeptical of the carnivores. I require more photographic evidence.
