Glad to hear the ointment worked. I was going to recommend vitamin E oil...but you got somethint that works, Yay!

I haven't gone swimming again. I kept talking myself out of it, and then I did some weed-whacking in shorts and now I've got some kind of itchy rash other than poison ivy all over my legs. Ick

Oh noooooooo!! Maybe an oatmeal bath would help for the itching??

I highly recommend triamcinolone acetonide cream 0.1% but you have to get a prescription for it.

I've been using witch hazel and this soap called, ditch the itch, which has some ingredients like tea tree oil, but it's not really helping. I don't have a "regular" Dr., but my chiropractor is a naturopath. I'm going to see him tomorrow and hope he has something that will help, if not I'll ask about the cream. Our house is under construction and taking a bath is not a pleasant option right now. Thanks for your suggestions!

I'm so stoked for you I'm getting a little misty eyed thinking about it. Enjoy your new-found freedom.

I'm so proud of ALL of you !! EEEEE!!!!

And question - can't you use some hydrocortizone creme on the poisin Ivy? Or I know my parents take benadryl to help, and when I was younger we used to buy a creme at Walmart especialy for it..... "Ivyrest" that's what it was, they swore by it.

Anyways good luck to all of you! I went again this weekend and even laid out in the sun on the beach a bit (naughty!) The waves were big and it was fun and I'm thinking good exercise trying not to get swept away! :P

Not NAUGHTY....HEALTHY!!! Vitamin D deficiency is quite common in overweight people. You NEED your vitamin D! If you are low carbing, you wont be depleting your body of vitamin C, which is what your body uses to repair sun damage. Carbs also destroy collagen. So low carbing plus sun will not make you look like old shoe leather.

In Australia, they had a big nation campaign to get people to use sun screen and avoid sun exposure. The campaign was very successful....and cancer rates WENT UP!!! Vitamin D actually protects your body from several different types of cancer while avoiding the sun does not.

If you have been avoiding the sun, start taking vitamin D3 (2000 IU - 4000 IU) to build up your blood levels before you try sun exposure. This will prevent you from bursting in to flames Your doctor can check the blood levels, or, if you don't have insurance, there are online labs where you can send a blood sample to have it tested.

So GO GET SOME SUN, use a block (like clear zinc) instead of a sun screen if you are going to be outside for hours at a time. Otherwise wear protective clothing AFTER you get a good 15 minutes - 30 minutes of daily mid day sun exposure.

Very interesting about the Australian study, and cancer rates going up-wow!

I didn't think all of the red dots (it looks like chicken pox on my legs -ick) I had were poison ivy, but my doc says it is, so I got some cream and hopefully I can get it under control soon. I can't go to the pool with them looking like this!

Enjoy these swimming days.

"Burst into flames" AHAHAHHAHA that is SO me ! I'm very fair skin toned and yes have been avoiding the sun for years, not only because I've been large and ashamed but because I don't want wrinkles :P So I wonder if you're right about that defficiancy? Huh.... Well, I did start taking a multi a few weeks ago, I'll check it's label to see how much I'm getting there.

Interesting info for real, and thank you !

Oh my GOSH! I just found this thread from two years ago, right before I found out I was pregnant and stopped low-carbing. I must have been WAY horomonal to type all that out! Not that it's a bad thing, I'm just surprised I wrote all that, and now, thinking about the troubles my husband and I have been having (2 years and 2 babies later) it makes me smile to think about what nice things I wrote about him!

I totally want to give that man a hug right now!
