Is this true? Could it work for many people? My understanding is that if someone switches to high carb diet for a while then return back to low carb, he will gain weight and will even find that the low carb diet has become not as effective as it used to be.

It might be like a cyclical ketogenic thing, where you do have high carb periods, but it's targeted for your workouts.

for Dave!

Cyclical Ketogenic Diets (CKD) have been around for ages, and used frequently by bodybuilders. As the name suggests, you cycle back and forth between low carb/high fat (ketogenic) and high carb/low fat. There's a prescribed regimen of exercise that goes along with it though, so it's not just a "diet only" program.

The idea is that the carb-up fills the muscles with glycogen, which then gets depleted during the ketogenic phase with intense weight-lifting exercises. This in turn leads to greater muscle gains and strength.

Check out the information in this thread .. CKD 101 ... http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthread.php?t=16165

Yeah, in a couple of those pictures, the poor guy looks like he was sewn together like a ragdoll.

ketogenic 'carb cycling" diets like Body Opus and the Ananbolic diet have been around for ages..

Zero carbs for 5 days followed by a weekend of carb loading.

The system relies on the muscle producing effects of insulin during your weekend load..as ww all know insulin is very anabolic(muscle producing)but it also our fat storing hormone.

so it has to be a precise carb up..You just can't start slamming potatoes, rice, Hydra fuels..or you will start to lay down bodyfat.

I've seen it happen a million times. People go to long on the carb up or eat too much..and start putting a little weight around the midsection and losing their definition.

I can't recall the carb ratio for the weekend. I think it was determined by bodyweight per kilo..

His trainer is wrong..it does not jack up the metabolism..

Protein is the most thermic marconutrient..not carbs! fat is the least thermic, followed by carbs.

if you up your protein intake, you will burn more calories than you would irf you

sorry my boy got to the post quick reply button..

Eating more protein will burn more calories than eating carbs..cycled or not.

Now there are less extreme carb cycling programs out there..TKD and CKD

50 grams one day and 150 the next kindof thing..

But why not just stick with LC? If insulin is the issue for weight loss/gain why cycle?

Now if you are doing an event aand feel you must do carbs o enhance performance, then great.

Some do well with carb cycling..I haven't seen many who have

All I know is that his diet was fantastic. I don't believe that he is the person with a strong will who can stand a painful diet.

He did not seem to be hungry or lacking energy during any of his interviews. When they told him that he had to lose additional 45 lbs before the surgery is done, he did not panic. It only meant to him that he had to stay on his diet a little longer. This means that his diet has been a sure thing with no stalls or interruptions.

Thank you Doreen for the link to the carb cycling thread. When I have the time, I'll read more about it.

Initially i thought his skin sag was bad......but if you realise just how big he really was, it's not that bad.

Certaintly bad enough to require surgery - no doubt!

Looks like a lot of muscle mass was lost, he doesn't have much muscle bulk.

But he's bulking up now - good on him!

He must feel fantastic after all that!

To me the scaryiest thing would have been the surgery!!
