I’m not sure about the jello/tingling feeling. I know that when I push myself to hard I need a day to recuperate. Congrats on running for a whole .5 mile! I’ve been increasing my jogging time/distance each week, too. When I first started I could even jog for a 1 minute. Now I’m up to 11 minutes (1 mile). I want to be able to do a 10 min mile in the next few weeks. Anyhow, good job…keep up the good work.

I guess I've got some catching up to do... luckily I haven't been regularly exercising that long that I can still kick off a gym log

Brief synopsis of what's brought me here:

My father passed away from lung cancer on March 11th of this year, 2007. It was only a little over 4 months since he was diagnosed. He had been smoking his entire life.
Once he was diagnosed and started getting sick, he started reiterating to me how important one's health was...
I remember being in the hospital with my dad, before they brought him home on hospice care and he told me that there's a Chinese saying..
that your health is always #1... if you have family, put a 0 to the right of the 1 so you have 10... have wealth, add another zero...love, another zero...
and the higher your number is, the more fulfilling your life is...
but take away that #1.. and you have nothing... all you have are a bunch of 0's...
nothing matters if you don't have your health
and I just thought that was so profound and sad and true.. and it's one of the last things my dad ever said to me in his final days that I will never ever forget...

Shortly before my dad passed, DH and I invested in a real treadmill. I mean a refurbished top of the line commercial treadmill (what you would find in gyms across the country)... not a "home" treadmill..
Brand new, this thing retailed over $5K
We bought it refurbished (2005 model) for little less than half of that...
It was still a TON of money but we had gone through the WalMart special treadmills before and knew that wasn't what we wanted...
After my dad passed, I started really focusing on my health and using it..
So far, since having the treadmill hooked up (it required its own grounded cable, special outlet and dedicated line ran directly from the breaker box) I have used it almost every single day.

My goal is to some day look back on my gym log at the very first page and maintain my promise to be a better healthier me. Because my dad is right.. without your health, you have nothing.

First I wanted to tell you that you are doing a Great job.
I am sorry to hear about your loss, it's sad to watch someone suffer that you love. I am sorry.
And, I wanted to say THANKS also, this post may be the reason that I put the cigarettes down. I have been wanting to and wanting to but can not find the incentive to make me quit.
I think you found it for me in this post.
Again, I am sorry for your loss, and I want to thank you for sharing this post.
Brenda

Brenda, you can do it. I was up to a pack and half earlier this year. I feel so much better now. No more coughing/hacking and waking up every morning feeling sick. I remember the first day I tried speed walking on the treadmill and starting huffing and puffing. I was like "no way." I really want to lose this weight more than I want to smoke. The whole process has been though but the choice was clear.

going to go to a place called Runner's Market on Saturday
apparently they do a free evaluation of your feet... look at how you walk and run... measure your feet and depending on your walking/running style, determine the best shoes for you
it was recommended by the girl who runs the company gym...
and since my New Balance shoes are WACK, i need new ones (the back of the left shoe has clumped up so it's one hard knot that's causing blisters)... and DH doesn't have good shoes..
so hopefully we'll be able to find shoes that will be appropriate..
DH says the balls of his heels hurt when he gets on the treadmill...

went to inlaws for dinner last nite and man I just can not eat as much as I used to...
i only had about 7 oz of steak, green bean casserole, and about 2 cups of broccoli and cauliflower... but man I was so full afterwards that my sides started hurting again (side stitches?? is that what they're called?)
we walked back home (inlaws only live 3 houses down from us ) and my side was just cramping and hurting so bad...
of course I got home and walked 1.92 miles on the treadmill anyways
my side hurt the entire time... but felt a little more worked out by the end of my walk...

of course my scale today is up to a 160/161
i hate that thing!

got on the treadmill tonite even tho i wasn't really in the mood to...
started out walking but tried increasing speed to a slow job of about 4.5mph...
well that just made my shins hurt really really bad..
so i thought, well great... here i am starting out and i'm getting shin splints already...
so slowed down to a walk..
next time on run, increased speed to 5.2...
well that made my shins hurt a little less...
slowed back down to a walk
and THEN i decided to see what would happen if I REALLY jacked the speed up so i increased it to 6.2...
well, wouldn't you believe it, my shins didn't hurt at all..
in fact, none of my body parts were hurting...
so finished the rest of the exercise with running speed of 6.2mph...
and even increased it to 6.5 at one point but i think that was too fast for me..
so it seems that somehow, the faster I run, the less my body hurts..??
not sure how that works but hey, I'll take it

2.41 miles
244 calories burned according to the treadmill

2.8 miles
293 calories

the new shoes came today and I ran in them
they were WONDERFUL
I didn't really notice too much of a difference until I really got warmed up and after the 2nd or 3rd spurt of running and then noticed that the more I ran, the better I felt..
and I was stopping only because I got winded, not because my legs and shin were sore...

weight's down to an almost solid 158
VERY happy about that
