Lowering LDL and Total Cholesterol Does Not Reduce Heart Risk
While I doubt you will ever see the headline above in a news article, it is the conclusion that can be drawn from the recently concluded (results announced today) RUTH study.
From http://www.medadnews.com/News/index...rticleid=330933
Quote:
The study included more than 10,000 women from 26 countries who were followed for up to seven years. All women enrolled in RUTH had known heart disease or were at high risk for heart attack.
Primary Endpoint Findings
Preliminary analyses of the study's two primary endpoints indicate:
-- EVISTA did not increase or decrease the combined endpoint of non-fatal heart attack, fatal heart attack, and hospitalized acute coronary syndrome compared to placebo.
|
As Evista is a drug for osteoporosis, why did Eli Lily do a seven year test on 10,000 people at risk for heart problems? Because Evista was found to lower LDL and total cholesterol in previous studies. And as all heart specialists 'know', lowering total and LDL reduces heart problems. While Lily has removed the information from their website, I found their old page in Google's cache.
Quote:
EVISTA also...
- Lowers cholesterol. EVISTA lowers total cholesterol by about 7% and LDL (bad) cholesterol by about 11%. It does not change HDL (good) cholesterol. The effect of EVISTA on risk for cardiovascular events is currently under study.

The medical community will never put one and one together to get two and relalize that the RUTH study is further proof that lowering cholesterol (even the 'bad' LDL cholesterol) is not the way to defeat heart problems.
