Default Kinda like Starbucks caffe mocha

Before doing LC I remember how much I liked Starbucks Caffe Mocha Espresso -- especially if you need a caffeine kick. I got their nutrition guide and unfortunately the small size of that drink has like 38 grams of carbs -- mostly from the chocolate syrup I assume.

I came up with a pretty simple recipe that comes out similar enough for my taste and is LC:

6 ounces of water, microwaved for about 1 1/2 minutes
2 rounded teaspoons of Folgers instant coffee (choose reg. or decaf)
4 Splenda tablets
2 ounces of Hood brand "Carb Countdown" chocolate dairy product

Carb analysis:
Water = zero
Instant coffee = 1.5g (NutritionWAP)
Splenda tablets = .3g (3.6g if using 4 packets instead of 4 tablets) (Splenda Packet Carbs)
Carb Countdown = .75g (Carb Countdown)

Total = 2.55g of carbs in 8 ounce glass

If you have to use Spenda packets instead of tablets, the carb count rises quite a bit (to 5.85g). If you used heavy whipping cream and a 0 carb liquid chocolate like DaVinci, you could get this down to 1.5g of carbs (the carbs in the instant coffee) but I haven't tried that and can't report on the taste.

This sounds really good! I'm going to try it when I'm off induction.

this is an excellent drink - i make it a lot myself. the possibilities with low carb milk are endless - egg nog, strawberry flavoured milk (with da vincis), a banana milkshake, etc.

I have an espresso machine and make Cafe Mocha that tastes exactly like Starbucks...maybe better. It only has 5.5 net carbs per cup! I think the extra few carbs are worth the taste. I just steam the hood brand "Calorie Countdown" chocolate milk and add a shot of espresso. Top it off with Whipped Cream.

P.S. If anyone is interested in buying an espresso machine that is cheap and works great, get the DeLonghi-EC155. it costs less than $100 and uses the individually wrapped espresso pods so you never have to deal with grinds or stale coffee. I got mine here in California at Fry's Electronics. I don't know what I would do without it.
