I was looking up RX info on Glucophage (Metrormin) & Glipizide
and was surprised to learn they both have extended-release
formulations.

Of course I will consult my doctor, but I'm seeking opinions
on users of these extended-release medications, such as.....

How long have you taken them?

Have they been more effective in stabilizing your diabetes
than the non-extended formulations you took previously?

Any other information would be appreciated.

After being on regular Metformin for many years,(1000mgs twice
a day) I began to have terribles gastric problems and was
taking immodium every two or three days to enable me to go out
or the house!! AFter a colonoscopy, etc, to rule out bacterial
or other causes, the gastroenterologist said he thought it
most likely ws the Metformin. My endocrinologist then switched
me to the extended release form , continuing to take it twice
a day, and, so far so good. In the last 4-5 weeks I have neede
the immodium only once!

This is my personal experience adn I have not been on this new
form long enough to know if it is a permanent fix,. My bg's
are very good, with an A1c of 5.3.

I have been on extended metformin and glipizide for about a
year now and it has helped stablize those crazy readings I was
getting. I was on metformin for 3 yrs and then went to the
extended part. This seemed to help very little and the Dr.
started me on glipizied exstened with the metformin bingo!! it

Metformin, so I asked my doc to prescribe ER Glucophage (there
wasn't an ER Metformin yet). It treated me worse, so back I
went to Metformin. I had to dial back the dose to
1500mg (Itried to got to 2000mg recently-no joy) and add 2 X
3 tabs of Psyllium Husk to get control over the
"trots" and all the fun things that go along with
it, such as cramping, methane, etc. Just my
experience, there are others here who swear by it.

took them the first 6 months after diagnosed diabetic type 2.
I was taking Metfartin and avandia ( not sure if i spelt that
right) 1 1/2 no medications.

not sure - i just knew I didnt want to take them for long.

I have been taking the glucophage for about three years now if
not more. I was switched to the metformin when it was
available in XR. I can tell you that it works fine for me, My
last A1c was under 6. I adjusted to the gastric distress in a
short time.

I love that I take 1500 mgs at one time, every night after
dinner. Works for me.

Sleepy, your and my experiences show that YMMV is so true with
this disease. Although I have had only a few weeks of success,
and I don't think my system is perfect, nor do I trust it (I
still carry an immodium pill in every pocket in case) it does
seem to hav emade things better, while in your case it made
them worse. All I can say, is we just have to try it and to
each his/her own:-)

I don't know about Glipizide but I have been taking Metformin
ER for about 10 months now. Before that I was taking Metformin
(short acting version as my first doctor called it). I feel
and definitely sleep better since I started taking Metformin
ER. The ER version has "smoothed out" how I feel in relation
to when to when I eat and when I take the drug. To even it out
even more, I even divide the dose over the day. I would not
want to go back to regular Metformin.

From what I have read, splitting pills of ER drugs destroys
the ER ability. Can we assume you take two separate pills/day?

I couldn't stand the taste of Immodium, so I got some generic
Loperimide. 2 pills (tiny ones) and I am st for 24 hrs. Seems
easier than dragging a bottle of Immodium about. JMO
