Default sugar alcohol question...

Hello...

brief history on me... atkins 3 months, stopped march 04.. just started again, induction now, and trying to say away from all the low carb treats as I'm a junk food lover and when I was on atkins before I ate too many of the fun low carb foods. MY QUESTION... as I'm trying to avoid the Low Carb treats.. what is all the negative talk on sugar alcohol? All the recipes I've read, people are saying that there's no sugar alcohol and saying it like it's important and I need help here... so does all those low carb candies, like atkins bars and candy, have that sugar alcohol and that's why my body stops losing when I eat it? All the recipes I've read, which I plan to try after induction again, are home made and not packaged like the Atkins candy... will they also slow down my weight loss based on the sugar alcohol? I'm sorry I'm being repetitive, but can someone tell me more about this so that I can have my treats and not have them slow down my weight loss??? thanks

Although this article is a little dated (new research on erythritol has shown it to act differently from the other SAs), it should answer your questions:

I didn't read the thread, so sorry if this is repeating anything....

I've heard a lot of opinions here on the forum, that the sugar alcohols need to be counted as carbs. So, for example, if you ate 18g of carbs thru veggies, cheese, eggs, etc. and you're on Induction so you have a max of 20g net carbs, you would have 2g left over. So, then you think to yourself that you'll have one of those LC treats that has 17g of carbs, but ONLY 2 NET CARBS, RIGHT??? A lot of people would say that you have to count it as 17g carbs (bringing your total carbs for the day up to 35g) or some people say 75% of the carbs have to be counted or even 50% of the carbs.

So, if you were the first person and counted 100% of the carbs and you were considering your count to be 35g for the day, that may be over your CCLL (critical carb level for losing) and you would stall or maybe even gain.

That's my take on it and I've stalled big time on a lot of the s.a. products and other low carb products (bagels/bread, etc) so I just try to stay away from that stuff as much as possible and if I want a sweet treat I make the chocolate peanut butter cups in the Recipe area, chocolate mousse or something like that.

Hope this helped in some way

I'm even more sensitive. If I even walk down the aisle in the market with those bars on display, I stop losing weight!

I don't know any women who can eat them and still lose.
