Default Flax Sprouts? Why Not?

It struck me tonight...why not flax sprouts? I used to make alfalfa sprouts in my hippy years, yogurt too with a recipe from the Whole Earth Catalog.

They might become to mooky when soaked in water though. Hmm...

I gotta try this! Will keep you updated on how it goes...

What will you do with them if they do sprout?

This reminds me of a recipe in the Los Angeles Times several years ago: they were sprouting chana dal for the main substance of a salad. I never tried it because making a salad of unsprouted chana dal was less involved and pretty good -- tastes like a chick pea salad.

I look forward to reading your results.

I've been wondering about making mayo or aoili (spelling? lemon/garlic mayo) from part flax oil or Udo's oil. Anyone tried it?

Admire them?

I'll see what they taste like first, then probably use them in a salad. I'm going to be soaking the seeds tomorrow.

I've had all kinds of sprouts...sunflower, buckwheat, popcorn, daikon, all kinds of beans and lentils... Which reminds me. I have some hemp seeds that I should try sprouting.

If you like the taste, flax or Udo's oil is fine in aioli. Use 3/4 olive oil and 1/4 flax or Udo's. Blend it in by hand after you've finished with the olive oil so you won;t damage it.

Thanks for the proportions. I was going to attempt something much bolder -- and probably would have had to throw it out.

Flax seeds are mucilaginous which means the seeds store water around themselves in sort of a gelatinous sack. They will turn into a gooey mess and will never sprout if you soak them in a traditional sprouter. I've heard you can sprout them by mixing them in a sprouter with seeds or beans but I'm not too sure which kinds will work. Also, you could try spreading them on a wet towel like chia pet seeds... I've never tried it myself but maybe that would work!

Well Karen, how did you do ???

Got a mucky mess or what?

I have a friend who markets sprout stands, 3 jars to a frame, with a little drain.

Cheers Kathy

Great Minds Karen? I just flipped through one of those free health magazines that are in all the vitamin shops and saw that someone is selling sprouted flax seed powder. Can't remember all the claims as to why it is better. So there you go. Proof that M-waves exist. Colin

Haven't tried it yet. I got really busy after that post and it slipped my mind.

I think I'll have a go at it today!

Arrow sprouting flax seeds

I also attempted to sprout FLAX seeds in the traditional manner only to discover the GOOP would not let the seeds drain. Undaunted, I took the mucilaginous mass of seeds and spread them onto paper towels, covered with paper towels, then folded into a copact package. Each day I unfolded and watered the "plaster". Within 2 days I had some very tasty flax sprouts with just a 1/4 inch root.

I plan on using these in salads, and in making crackers out of lentil flour, garbanzo flour, and the ground sprouts. (I put my coffee mill to good use).

Smile flax seeds

Hi everyone.... excited to join this discussion on flax seeds. I've read that ground flax seeds lose their benefits if not used right after grinding or if they are cooked. Anyone else verify this? I have been wanting to sprout them and will try MPIZAR's helpful hint on what to do after the goop stage. If you come back to this thread, Mpizar,.... do you refrigerate them during this paper towel process? Any other good flax seed hints would be appreciated. I do not care for them ground in yogurt.

Default Flax Sprouts

After sprouting the flax to the desired maturity,
I refrigerated them. However, rather than using
paper towels, I'm looking for a slab of plain terra cotta to
sprout my flax seeds on, then keep them damp with a
spray mist. This methods seems to me to be the most
efficient and convenient.
