Hello Ladies,

My sister was just diagnosed at the age of 33 with PCOS. Luckily she drove up to where I live to see my allergist as she was having allergy problems. He is also into complementary medicine and reviewed all of her medical problems. I was with her and so he started asking us questions about our family medical history which led him to believe there were some thyroid problems in our family. He did some blood tests to check her T4, T3, reverse T3, etc among other things. We found out that she had a thyroid problem on top of the PCOS. He put her on the low carb diet and starting treating her thyroid problem. She was given a paper to read that one of his colleagues in another state had written about the correlation between Syndrome X and PCOS. He also had her stop her provera for now. She has been doing a low carb diet for about 6 - 8 weeks and has had her cycle return to normal so far. She also has lost 25 pounds and says she feels better than she has in several years. I said all this to say, make sure you have your doctor check your thyroid and do something more than just a TSH test. She had been struggling with the PCOS for the last couple of years with no real success until now. If you cannot find a good doctor that understands how all of this is interrelated, there is an area on about.com where people put in the names of doctors that have been a tremendous help to them.

Thanks for your time...
