Cool Gluten free processed meats

Does anyone know about Sausages etc. I have spoken to several butchers and they say anything from "All sausages contain fillers" to "in December 02 a law was passed to say they cannot contain fillers"
I had my g/f do some research and she came up with:

They must be Gluten Free which means – no wheat, corn, barley, or proteins found within grains.
Foods Labelled as this contain no detectable gluten, which means less than 20mg/100g of food of gluten
-Food Standard Australia/New Zealand

On Labels
Carbohydrates by Difference means, water, protein, fat, dietary fibre, ash and alcohol
Carbohydrates Available means, sugars and starch, oligo saccharids, glycogen and maltodexrins.

But we think only the products advertised as gluten free are 0 Carbs (as stated in the law on 20th dec. 2002)
Where as non disclosed items can and most likely do contain fillers.

"Composition of sausages must be no less than 500g/kg of fat free meat"

My local butcher has all sausages advertised as Gluten free, as well as the Chevapachichi's and Steakettes ...yum

If any1 can elaborate on the above please do.

Sorry I can't help you out on this question but I'm very interested in what anyone else might have to say on the matter. My d/h and I love (quality) sausages and have resorted to making our own because we figured bought ones are too carby. I'd love to be able to buy 'quality' low carb sausages as it's a pain having to make them. I'll speak to my local butcher and see what he has to say. I certainly don't recall ever seeing any labelled gluten free.

I'm sure I've seen gluten free sausages in the meat section at Coles.

I use a brand call 'Chevups' they are really good beef sausages and only contain about 1.5 carbs per serve (a serve being 2 sausages).

They're great for breakfast and are available at Coles in the sausages section of the meat dept.

Cheers

I have seen the Chevups but bypass them as we like chicken and pork sausages. Maybe I should give them a go!

The Coles brand, not the Farmland/Coles sausages, are very low in carbs. Can't remember exactly how much carbs, something like .2g/serve or something. There are 3 flavours, plain beef, italian and chilli. They're yum.

Local IGA supermarket (Bribie Island, Queensland) has a range of sausages and although not labelled as gluten free, the ingredients list shows only rice flour as the filler, together with some soy protein. Both of those are gluten free. My son has a gluten intolerant friend and I've tested them on him with no ill effects (thankfully!) . Don't know how much carb is in them though.

Had a good look in the meat section of my local Woolworths today and I saw some sausages labelled 'gluten free'. They had a whopping 11.4g of carbs per serve (2 sausages) so I won't be buying those! So 'gluten free' doesn't mean low carb!!

Hell that's scarey !!!!!!!!!
I'd like to hear the laws on sausages and processed meats from an authoritive source, not just some butchers opinion because as i stated above they were all of mixed views
Thanks Zedgirl ....hey why Zed ..not as in Nissan ?

No ....well yes
Ok my g/f did some further reasearch and here's the latest.

From the department of Health.
"Products sold from a supermarket will contain the nutritial information on the packet but from a butcher it all depends on what mix he uses"
"The Pre Mix which is used in sasuages is Gluten Free, Gluten Free though only means that certain cereals are exempt from that product.
Without a doubt the sausage it self will contain some carbohydrates though very minimal but they will be there"

Helen then rang the butcher to see if they knew but they were unsure and gave me the number to their suppliers "Supreme Sausages" the pork sausages per 100g contain 16.1% carbohydrates and the beef sausages per 100g contain 7.7% carbohydrates.

These are the above mentioned Gluten free sausages!

Default "Gluten Free" sausages are often made with rice flour.

"Gluten Free" sausages are made for people with Celiac Sprue, also known as Celiac disease. This is a genetic disease which interferes with the digestion process. When a celiac person eats foods that contain gluten, the immune system responds by damaging the villi in the small intestine. Gluten can be found in wheat, rye, barley, and possibly oats.

These sausages are often made with rice flour. I am under the impression that rice flour is high in carbohydrates.

Here in Melbourne, the Victoria market is far cheaper than the supermarkets but you are taking your chances with foods because nothing is labelled at the butchers. All they will tell you is that the sausages are gluten free and made with rice flour.

If you want low carb sausages then the Polish or Kransky style at the supermarket is an easy choice. However, these generally come smoked (Red in colour) and have a different taste to the traditional pork sausage. The upside of the supermarket is that many of the sausages have nutritional labels, so you may still be able to find a relatively low carb regular sausage.
