I do the long distances in 10s & 1s, running for 10, walking for 1, as a rule and I had to really, really fight with myself not to walk for more in that last 5k.

That's why I don't run/walk - I would just end up walking. I totally believe in it and think I would probably be faster if I did it, but I have zilch discipline for switching off like that - it's a lot of work and requires more mental toughness than just plodding along IMO. I deeply respect the people I see at races doing it. I have always been very consistent with my pacing even in the latter stages of races but I wonder sometimes if it's good. All the stories of champions I've read have portrayed their early days more like you - too fast and then the great burnout. You just learn better from mistakes.

I injured myself on this steep, deeply cambered downhill in my last half - I was in horrible pain and it never occurred to me to just stop or walk, just stupidly stubborn. I had 5K to go and every muscle and tissue in my pelvis started spasming and screaming "no". I had no idea I could hurt myself in the area 9if it was my hamstring or Achilles I would have stopped immediately) and I ended up with an ab muscle torn off it's connective tissue.

Ouch! That sounds painful.

I started running with 10s & 1s, so it got ingrained in me pretty early, I don't generally have a tough time starting & stopping and then restarting. It helps that I'm usually in a group, I train with a group, so when it's time to start running again, if nothing else, the peer pressure will get you going again!

Default So Much Information

Hi, I am 22 years old 5' 4" and weigh 190 lbs. I tried starting a 12 wk beginning runners' plan with a 3 mph walk pace and 6 mph run pace. Once I switched from walk2/run1 to walk1/run2, I struggled because of my heart rate and my calves throbbing. Next, I tried speed walking for 45 minutes a day, but I just don't feel like I'm working out. I want to do more. I am able to run for 30 minutes at a 12 minute mile pace (snail's pace), but I want to speed up AND lose weight. I have read varying opinions/advice, so I am confused as to what I should do. Should I stick to the walking plan, slow down the running pace for the walk/run plan, or just keep up the 12min/mile jog?

Just run if you like to run! Only running fast wil make you better at running faster speedwalking will just make you better at walking faster. You can download different training plans for speed from Runnersworld.com or just by a copy of the magazine for tips. 12 minute miles is not that slow for a beginner, believe it or not, and you can make speed improvements doing some very simple things like speeding up in intervals while running. I really recommend this book http://www.amazon.com/Run-Fast-Trai...6135034&sr=8-10.

Have you thought about entering a race? The adrenaline of the event might help you push the pace a bit and discover your true limits.
