Default potassium

Does anybody know if it is ok to take potassium while breast feeding. I started taking magnesium and potassium after starting low carb so I thought I better ask. I looked online but the info was confusing.

Is your diet falling short for potassium? If you haven't looked at how much you're eating - you could input your foods into fitday.com for a few days as see how you're doing!

I can't imagine why supplemental minerals could possibly be unsafe for a nursing baby. Whether or not you need these minerals is another question though.

It's not a problem. Using one of the low sodium salts can be a handy way to boost your potassium.

Please check with your doc. You could call the office nurse w/ the question. Potassium supplementation can cause abnormal heart rhythms, and babies have immature renal systems (& thus do not clear drugs as quickly as adults). Your doc should know the dose that you are taking.

Most doctors do not study nutrition and many doctors do not take courses on breastfeeding, so I would actually NOT call a doctor -- I would call a lactation consultant. Or contact your local La Leche League.

As a general rule there is very little you can eat as part of a normal diet that makes much difference to breastmilk. Even most medications are fine. Anything which is ever available in a paedatric dose is ok while breastfeeding. And almost every drug that is unsuitable has an alternate which is ok, apart from things like chemotherapy.

The danger of not breastfeeding is usually higher than the danger of breastfeeding while taking medication.
