Default Amber lights, amber goggles

Some of the paleo experts have recommended wearing amber goggles or switching to amber light bulbs after 7 pm because all of this artificial blue light at night is throwing off our circadian rhythms, causing cancer, causing insomnia, and more.

Have any of you tried this? Did it make any difference? What condition did it help?

Amazon has lots. I found some at a local hardware store. There are lots of light bulb and lamp sellers online besides amazon.

When my old electric alarm clock with blue-grey screen broke, I replaced it with one with red numbers and do seem to sleep more soundly. Previously a blue haze lit up most of the bedroom like dusk. The new one has visible red numbers, but that's it, the rest of the room is pitch black. It was not easy to find a clock with red numbers (90% are blue/green/white), but the simple westclox I found was on sale too.

You can now get fluorescent bulbs that have a "warm" coloured light. Some even are shaped like incandescent bulbs which I needed for lamps where the shade clamps directly onto the bulb. They are more expensive, but worth it to make the home cosy.

I've read you can just get the yellowish bulbs, the sort labeled "warm". Also, if you want to "wake-up" have blue or (daylight) bulbs. I think I might get a blue light for my office.

There's also a program called f.lux you can run that will shift your computer over to less blue light output as the sun goes down.

When we first moved into the condo I bought myself a spiffy Sharper Image clock ... that lights up my rather small bedroom with bright blue light even on the low setting. No wonder I can't sleep. Now I'm getting an LL Bean "moon beam" clock where the backlight can be turned OFF. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

It's amazing how even a tiny bit of light can be so disturbing at night. In one bedroom I had a smoke detector on the ceiling that had a little green light indicating that it was functioning. Even that tiny little light bothered me.

I haven't fully implemented the amber lights yet but I've got them in my bedroom and bathroom now as a second set of lights. It's very calming. I can see how if you had only amber after 7 pm you would go to bed much earlier. Besides being calming, it's hard to read or get much done.

I still doubt that it will make much difference healthwise since I am not suffering insomnia.

Daylight savings begins this weekend; time to do something to adjust to the time change.

I'm going to go further with the amber lights starting tonight. I tried Wednesday night after 7 pm and it made me really sleepy. I (uncharacteristically) kept dozing off while reading online. I didn't do it last night and weirdly woke up at 5 am this morning and couldn't go back to sleep -- I don't know what that's about but now I'm sleepy.

I have a lot more experimenting to do but I think it really has an effect and switching back and forth might be a bad idea.
