Default never mind about Vegemite, what about BONOX

Hi cave

whilst shopping today in the spreads section I noticed that you can still get BONOX which is a sort of vegemite spread, but made from beef stock, and advertises 9% carbs. It's supposed to be made into a beef soup drink, so the actual carbs in a cup of the stuff would be minimal after dilution with hot water. It can be used as a stock concentrate in soups etc.

Anybody tried it recently? I've gone on to Pommie oxo cubes recently but wouldn't mind getting some BONOX again to try it out. Trouble with OXO is that during the Pom foot and mouth epidemic they remained available in Australia, suggesting that their relationship with cows has been terminated sometime in the past few years.

Will post results of experiments.

Haven't looked at this thread for a while. I'm glad to say that Dandelion & Burdock is available in sugar free and is VERY nice indeed. Tizer and Irn Bru were the fav drinks when I was a kid in Scotland. Whiskey and Irn Bru, yuk.
Hmmmmn...wonder what Irn Bru and marmite is like?

Vegemite rules....but Promite rules harder. :P It's great on slices of cheddar cheese.

Oh and Australian Marmite is apparently very different to the Marmite you get in the UK.

I peel a Banana and smear a light coating of Vegemite on it
Sounds odd but my Mum used to give it to me as a child and now my Daughter eats it.

I have a friend who live in the states and I sent her over two jars she just loves it.

The Carb Content of Vegemite:
19.5g per 100g
or
1g per serving

A serve contains 25% RDI of Niacin and Riboflavin, also 50% RDI of Thiamin and Folate.

Funny how it's actually owned by an American company

One of the things I missed with lowcarbing was my toast and vegemite for breakfast. I started off last week with bacon and eggs, I get sick of them fairly quickly. Started making Fibrex pancakes so I could eat less bacon and eggs. One morning I was making the kids lunches when I had a yen for vegemite - just spread a pancake with butter and vegemite. yummo , now i can have my vegemite and eat it too.

not a big fan of vegimite..however one place i worked food was provided and one of the miners would carry a small jar of vegimite and eat it straight with a tea spoon .... i tried it once and blargggggggh.. perhaps there should be a vegimite only diet...a guarenteed way to loose weight

I think the reason a lot of people don't like Vegemite is they spread it on thick like jam or peanut butter, not smear it on kind of thinly. I knew some Americans who had a go taste-testing it and you should have seen how they slapped it on! Even I wouldn't it it that thick - it's too strong! There needs to be some kind of international education about these finer points.

Best way to eat marmite while doing low carb , is to smear a thin layer along a fresh celery stick. You get yummy salty flavour along with a refreshing crunch!

Chiming in for NZ - Vegemite and Marmite are weaning foods here, too. Umm, Vegemite for me - a taste straight out of the jar while making school lunches or butter and vegmite together.
