Default Urgent...Blood sugar question...

I played basketball between 6 and 8 and I came home feeling nauseus and I decided to check my blood sugar....came at to 59. I'm 20 years old. I've had it as low as 53 and feel fine but i dont feel ok now. I ate some popcorn, some nuts and bacon to perhaps help and its back up to 67. Normally its been in the 70's and 80's. Should I worry? I'm in induction. What are some suggestions on keeping it up? just in case I don't check the boards soon enough my email is ******* I appreciate the help.

Hi Justwar,

First of all, are you a diabetic? You may need a plan which allows more carbs than Atkins Induction.

Had you been eating carbs without protein before playing?

Generally the best way to avoid low blood sugar is to only eat carbs with protein.

If you are diabetic, you may need to have the dose of your insulin or oral meds adjusted now that you are low carbing, particularly as you are exercising.

HTH

Default Hey.

I'm not diabetic from what I'm aware of. I've had all the pretests. I ended up eating a few Cashews, and some popcorn and it made me feel a lot better. Right now its at 72. I just stopped drinking aspartame and caffeine yesterday too. But the exercise was vigorious. Is there other protein or sugarfree carb options that boost sugar?

Your sugar was low due to a spike in insulin. You may be hypoglycemic. People who have low-blood sugar and know nothing of Atkins know that protein helps to keep your insulin stable. Carbs will stimulate your insulin so make sure that you consume protein with your carbohydrates. I, personally, do better if the protein is in the form of meat instead of eggs or nuts.
