I got my blood test results back today after six months of LCing! Unfortunately, I didn't get one done before I started, but I had the nurse dig up some results from 1997 as a rough comparison:

total cholesterol: 157 (1997) / 232 (2005)
HDL (2005 only) 91
LDL (2005 only) 132
risk ratio: 2.5
tryglycerides: 53 (1997) / 48 (2005)

My 2005 test also showed a red flag for ketones, at 15, whatever that means. The reference says it should be negative. I'm assuming that a higher than "normal" level of ketones was found in my blood due to (gasp) the burning of fat instead of sugar.

My fear is, though, that friends will hear the 232 total cholesterol number and say "See? It didn't work! You're killing yourself!"

The red flag on ketones is normal considering your diet.
At least your tryglycerides are lower.
Check these out, I think you'll like the reading.

The cholesterol thing is all BS anyway; I will not let a Dr. check mine. Some good information at these sites:

Hi guys! Thanks for the threads. I've read alot about how higher cholesterol is usually healthier than low cholesterol, and I really believe it to be true. BUT, somehow it's still hard to deprogram myself after so many years of brainwashing! From similar threads here I see that my ratios of LDL/HDL are excellent, but people that don't understand will still freak out about my total number, considering how much it went up in eight years. Never saw the doctor, so I don't know what side of the fence he's on - hopefully I won't get a call saying I need to be on drugs!

Good luck with it all and don't let others discourage you from doing what you have to do (including your new doctor).

Your HDL and triglyceride levels are phenomenal. If anyone asks, tell them about your HDL and TRIs.

Who cares what anyone thinks. Don't tell them the numbers, just say doc said they were fine....I think in this case it's ok to lie a bit. After all it IS no one else's business!

If doc says meds you have the right to say no. Please read up on cholesterol....and PLEASE take CoQ-10 if you do choose to go on any meds. Also be aware that most docs will refuse to believe most side effects caused by the meds are actually caused by the meds.

You've done great! Keep it up....and tell everyone to buzz off.

I'd never go on those drugs! I've read all the cholesterol literature here, there, and everywhere, and have purposely made my diet a high fat one for the past six months. I should probably change my profile plan to "high fat"! And even by "accepted" standards, my risk is very low, off their charts. Right on the lipid profile report was a chart labeled:

"HDL interpretation - from Framingham study"

risk:
1/2 average 3.27
average 4.44
2x average 7.05
3x average 11.04

Mine was a 2.5, well below average. There were red flags by all my cholesterol numbers, even the HDL, but then the ratio was still great. My doctor is probably still scratching his head, trying to figure that one out! There aren't alot of LCers around here, so I doubt he's seen too many comparable results.

I am confused??? why would a 15 on ketones be a red flag? maybe a sign of diabetes meaning they would red flag it. Not that is why it was showing.... it is the diet. Well, I expect to get the red flag when I go in December. LOL

Thanks for all your help on my thread

Best of Luck..
Kathy

Makes sense that it would be "red flagged". This is usually nothing more than a result outside the "accepted" range.

I have arthritis, degenerative, ratehr extensive. My CRP (C-Reactive Protein) has always been elevated as a result. So my results are "flagged", but doc knows, because of my history to not worry about it. Of course the last one was within normal limits (WNL) and she didn't have a CLUE what to do with that result! It was high-normal, but stil normal.
