I think that's related to taking statins.

Most heart attack patients’ cholesterol levels did not indicate cardiac risk

Ok, so there you go. 75% of the people having heart attacks had cholesterol levels that didn't warrant (in their doctor's eyes) doing anything about. That shows you what a great tool the standard cholesterol test is (NOT!).

Dr. BG has a really good article up on LDL and the sort that matters (but no one measures).

http://drbganimalpharm.blogspot.com...w-carb-and.html

Quote:
Saturated fat controls Lp(a). (HERE, HERE, Krauss and DELTA)
Low carb controls Lp(a). (HERE and Volek; insulin-Lp(a))

This translates to the control of atherosclerotic plaque and regression.

Zoe Harcombe posted today some details about cholesterol testing and how molar mass further impacts results.

Charles Poliquin has a say in it too.

Cholesterol, as such, doesn't have much to do with the heart disease. Triglycerides are even more important as a marker.

Also take into the account that the correlation: high cholesterol - heart disease was established from the sample of AVERAGE people (not LC people by any means).

Here is Poliquin's article on it:

Seems odd your triglycerides went up. How low carb are you?

Well, that would explain why the triglycerides aren't coming down. You'll need to trim that back to 50 or so to see real changes, especially if you tend to make a lot of small cholesterol by genes.

I got tested in November and then again today. I know I am bumping an old thread, but would like to understand the best way to decrease my triglycerides, LDL, and total cholesterol.

My numbers are below:
BP 134/80, now 120/71
Glucose 98, now 88
Total Cholesterol 295, now 370
Triglycerides 229, now 302
HDL 61, now 79
LDL 188, now 230
BMI 23.4, now 22.3

My diet may have something to do with this, but I honestly thought I was doing a low-carb, i.e., ketogenic diet. My weight has also gone down since the first of the year (see my stats) so I am genuinely puzzled.

You should start a new thread.

How long have you been doing LC? How LC are you? Do you smoke, take any prescription drugs, drink a lot?

Your TGs are pretty high. They do come down reasonably quickly on a LC diet, like 25% every 3 months I think.

Your HDL is good!

Do you have a lot of people dying from heart disease at an early age in your family? If so, you could have familial high triglycerides.

Thanks, Nancy. I started one under this subforum. I've been LC-ing for 3-4 months now. I started in late January, I think. I've lost weight and hover toward continued loss, I've lost about 2 pounds, though I fluctuate, in the past month. I think it might be something I'm eating. I put more information about my cheat eating in the new thread. My problem is my TG went *up* ... they should have gone down. I did also leave out over there that when I eat at home/buffet I deliberately load up on fat and try to hit the ratios in my profile. I will eat like 6 pieces of bacon with two eggs topped with cheese...I cook the eggs in the bacon grease and then sometimes mix a small amount of coconut milk with 3/4 cup of cream and drink between meals. I easily consume a quart of heavy cream each week. Maybe 1.5 ... anyway ... it may turn out this is the problem!
