Default Do not use rebounder or jump if you are 45+ years old

Today I asked my plastic surgeon (drooping eyelid surgery) when I could resume using my new rebounder. He said, "Never!"

He said that two weeks ago his wife was at a gym with a trainer and she was jumping. A retina became detached from the jumping motion.

The wife's eye doctor told my doctor that anyone over 45 years old should NEVER do jumping because of possibility of detached retinas.

So, I will be selling my new mini trampoline. Too bad as I used it only three or four times before my surgery.

They probably shouldn't do any jogging either then... that's bouncier than rebounding.

You don't have to jump on a rebounder for it's benefits for the lymphatic system. You can just gently bounce.

Why would you use it for jumping?

I often walk in place on my rebounder, especially when the weather is bad and I can't walk outside.

I think that it would have to be some pretty heavy duty bouncing to detach a retna!! Wouldn't the same apply to jumping jacks or jumping rope, even running? I've never heard of such a thing, does that mean I can't bounce anymore, 'cos I REALLY have fun on mine

I would imagine that the drop in blood pressure and corresponding drop in eye pressure would more than make up for any "bouncing".

After all, we LCers are already making positive changes in our health...

Just passing along the info that was given me.

I'd rather be 500 pounds or lose a limb than risk losing my eyesight!

I googled on the subject after I read this. The only recommendation I saw was you shouldn't do bouncy exercises if you've had a detached retina, not that such things will happen in normal, healthy people.

I think maybe this doctor was having a wee bit of a knee-jerk reaction.

You mean, sort of like the ones doctors have ("You're going to destroy your kidneys!!") when you say you're on low-carb?

Thanks Nancy, been doing some research myself and can't find much, I can just attest to my own experience, been bouncing 3x a week and no problems except for some sore muscles
All info is good though, we need as much as possible before we make a decision about anything, such as following ATKINS

Yesterday my husband took my rebounder to a used sports shop to sell it.

My husband was explaining that the doctor said that I shouldn't use it - and the salesman interrupted - "Oh, yes - detached retinas."

He knew that this can happen.
