Default Hula Hoop

Do you hoop? I just got one and lemme tell you -it's hard! Requires massive 'core strength' and I'm finding holding my arms up (to keep them out of the way) gets tiresome quickly.

How did I get one? Funny story - went to a very rural, earthy music festival and people all over the place were hooping. Some so extravagantly it looked like they were bell dancing. There was a woman selling them and she gave me a lesson on how to do it (I'm totally a klutz). She said 10 minutes a day would whittle away my tummy (skinny little bean that she was) and it made sense.

I've worked my way up to a whole minute. It's rough on your lower back if you have any issues there. Apparently there are hoop clubs everywhere and it's the new (old) thing. Who knew?

Do you hoop? Other than practice, anything to know?

As a child, I hooped from neck to knees and back again, daily.

Funny how "fit" we were as children, no?

Me!!! My husband ordered one for me and I've had it a little over a week. Last night we were laughing over my having "sports injuries" for the first time in my life. I'm bruised from my hips to my ribs on both sides of my waist, and the odd bruise here and there on my legs and arms but I love it. Waiting until I heal up a little is killing me! So I'm working on knees and off-body moves until the bruises fade a little.

Music is the key. Good jams and the time flies! Oh, and I don't know if it's just the hoop but I noticed last night that I am getting a much more defined waist, even though my abs were previously nonexistent.

Awesome! Thanks for the links - I'll give it a shot. I've been doing mine solo with no tunes so I will get my jams out and see how long I can go. Silly question (but seriously!) what do you do with your arms!!??

I look ridiculous while holding them up out of the way. Not graceful in the least, but it works. And today I got the hoop up to my chest! Of course, I quit at that point so I could end on a high note and the heat was starting to get to me. My wonderful husband got me an MP3 player so the whole neighborhood doesn't have to listen to the music of my youth.

I look ridiculous too!!! I guess we should be laughing and celebrating the fact that we are trying new stuff and giving it a go! The link to the hoop site helps - thanks. And I'm definitely gonna get jams. Been meaning to do that (I still have a walkman - remember those????)

I've been think of getting a hoop.
Are yours weighted? I heard the ones for kids aren't effective.

I had a little lesson from a hoop instructor which included why size matters. She said that beginners usually need the big hoop because it allows you more "corrective" time if the hoop starts to fall. When placed on the floor, she said it should come up to somewhere between your belly button and chest. Just for kicks I tried her hoop which was tiny. Impossible. She was SO right on the big hoop. Mine isn't weighted.

Yesterday I hooped to a full Adele song (versus my less than one minute up to that point). Made me out of breath and I looked ridiculous but I did it by golly!
