PS. When I read Dr Daniel Amen's books on brain chemistry, I now understand why I want sweets. It increeases the feel good hormone seratonin. I use 5HTP to boost seratonin without increaseing the carbs. He recommends using better carb foods like potatos and sweet potatos and beets and carrots rather than sweets and breads and grains. But you get the idea... carbs do help us feel good.

To avoid the highcarb foods, I take 5HTP, which is available OTC at most stores that have a big selection of supplements. He did not suggest using seratonin directly though that is available. And I have not been able to find out why he doesnot mention using seratonin rather than 5HTP and a couple options in the seratonin pathway.

Two of us in my family take 5HTP with good results---less irritable, and overall better mood about everything.

Serotonin has signalling roles in the gut etc. as well as the brain. Wikipedia tells me it can trigger both vomiting and diarrhea, so maybe 5HTP is a better choice for that reason?

Nope, that's not it;

Quote:
Serotonin taken orally does not pass into the serotonergic pathways of the central nervous system, because it does not cross the blood–brain barrier. However, tryptophan and its metabolite 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), from which serotonin is synthesized, does cross the blood–brain barrier.

That was my other guess, but you have to call your shots, or they don't count.

Thanks teaser!!

That serotonin cant cross the blood-brain barrier is what I was thinking, but didn't have evidence to verify it. Didn't think to look at wiki for such detailed biochemical data.

I buy several bottles when on sale as it is very effective for me.

Tryptophan is the other Dr Amen mentions. It has limited abilities to be effective because of the very small size of the protein; apparently larger particles of protein ( or amino acids) clog the entrance pathway so tryptophan looses the battle. Perhaps that is why doses are given after exercise, and the amino acids are moved out of the blood stream, leaving the tryptophan room to do its thing.

Of course, many foods have tryptophan. I raise turkeys for the table.

Thanks for the reminder about 5HTP. I added it.
