My post-lifting 'meal' is a cocktail consisting of one ABB Pure Pro drink (40g protein, 2 g carbs) and about 3 rolls of Smarties (rockets in Canada) for about 21g of dextrose.

Cheers,

Friday

Ketones also stink, so the smell of your urine is a telltale sign of ketosis, as is your breath.

They also make your sweat smell different ... I don't know how many hats I've gone through because of excessive keto sweat. LOL.

But, yes, it's easy for me to tell. It's a noticable change for me.

I have a hard time choking down most whey powder products, but I like the Atkins ready made shakes ...

The fat content is 9 g per serving (and 20 g protein) - is that too much fat to make a good PWO food choice?

If not, any recommendations for other pre-made shakes?

Thanks experts!

Actually yes, this is really too much fat post workout. I don't use pre-made shakes, just look around and find one that is low carb (3g or less), lowfat (0-2g) and at least about 20g protein.

I personally don't like fat PWO because it slows the delivery of protein. 20g isn't very much protein post lifting. Post cardio, I don't do whey because it's too fast and kicks me out of ketosis.

I get in about 35g (post-lifting) of chocolate flavoured whey that I doctor up with 5g of glutamine and some extra splenda. I don't like the other flavours, but chocolate seems to cut the whey taste the best.

My supp store has a house brand that they sell cheap by the bucket.

Thanks for the quick replies, Built and Chipperoo!

I'm starting a formal weight lifting routine at the Y next month and want to do it as 'right' as I can. There is a lot to learn and I appreciate your expertise.

AntiM, do you have a Trader Joe's near you? Ours carries Worldwide shakes--the capucchino flavor is delicious! 100 calories, 21 grams protein, 3 net carbs, 1 gram fat. (If that's not enough, you could try the other flavors, which have more cals and more protein).

Thank you! That's a great solution. I've been looking for a good reason to visit TJ's.

What is a fast carb vs slow carb? I'm confuzzed. I assumed they all got into your system fairly quickly. How many g's should I be taking PWO? I'm getting about 35g protein in my PWO whey mix. I'm also taking the GNC Pro-performance mix that has:

Protein - 20g
Fat - 2g
Carbs - 4g
Sodium - 150mg
Cholesterol - 70mg

I usually take about 1 1/2 - 2 scoops with 8 ounces of water and 8 ounces of 2% milk on my lift days. Where do you buy dextrose? How do you use it? Is it powdered, liquid? I don't know much about it. I know newbies always ask "how much is enough?" and "how much is too much?" but it's hard to find actually numbers when it comes to PWO foods. We know what to do, just not how to do it if that makes sense. Thank god for this forum!

Cori, you'll have to experiment with this, but for many women, too much of the PWO carb spills over into fat stores. I'm one of them. I get fat when I do this, so I only do the protein.

The amount of protein you are taking sounds perfect. Follow it with a meal of REAL protein a few hours later, with fat. PWO, you don't WANT the fat, because it slows the delivery of the protein to your cells. The rest of the time, you DO want the fat, because it slows the protein down and prevents it from glycolyzing.

Fast carbs are basically sugars - fruit, juice, pop, candy - without fat or protein or fibre to slow them down. I like 'em PRE-workout, but not post.

Dextrose is sold at bodybuilding supply stores. Some candies have dextrose, too.

How's that?

i simply don't have room in my daily ratios to count in the dextrose i'd need to consume PWO.

just to touch on fat PWO... you don't want to do that for another reason: it can make you store fat.

an exception is muscle milk and evopro - they have lots of MCTs in them.

Should you drink a protein or Atkins shake after you work out if you are in Induction?
