Exclamation Daikon recall

Didn't somebody have trouble with Daikon recently?

HEALTH HAZARD ALERT - FRESH DAIKON MAY CONTAIN
SHIGELLA

OTTAWA, June 26, 2001 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency(CFIA) is
warning the public not to consume fresh daikon produced by Kim's Farm,
Surrey, B.C. as it may be contaminated with Shigella.

The fresh daikon was produced and packed by Kim's Farm, Surrey, B.C.
and distributed to British Columbia and Alberta. The following distributors in
British Columbia may have received affected product: Pacific Produce
Company Ltd.,Van-Whole Produce Ltd. and T & T Supermarket Inc.

Consumers who have purchased fresh daikon on or after June 15, 2001 to
present should enquire at the retail outlet where they purchased the daikon
to verify if the store received the recalled product.

The product is being voluntary recalled from the retail level by the producer.

Shigella infection can cause diarrhea (which may be bloody), fever, nausea,
and vomiting. Illness usually lasts from 4 to 14 days. In some persons,
especially very young and very old people and people with compromised
immune systems, the diarrhea can be more severe. Infection can occur after
eating and drinking food and water that is contaminated with Shigella and it
can be passed from person to person.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with this product.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is monitoring the effectiveness of
the recall.

For more information, consumers and industry can call the CFIA at 1 - 800-
561-3350

That Kim's farm is bad news. The shigella outbreak in Vancouver concerning spinach last week was traced back to Kim's farm.

Although I'm a great believer in eating locally and seasonally, I am quite relieved that the spinach and daikon at the restaurant came from California.

I've got some daikon bought in that time period. Don't remember where I bought it to check with store. Is it probably okay if I peel it?

Yep, Liz.

The Health Board advised that the food be well cooked to "scare off" the bacteria.

Missed you last night!

Sorry to have missed it. Instead was at my dept. year end get together. Mostly women, and as a result, great munchies. As my office colleague says, women make civilization. Had a great time discussing what we've read this year and recommend (it was an English dept. do). Wonderful conversation. So much excellent Canadian lit continuing to be written, though Canlit wasn't all we've ben reading. We're all book geeks so enjoyed indulging two passions at the same time: food and talking about reading.

Sounds like a great evening!

Maybe you should convert them to low carb, then we could all have dinner at Stepho's!

Yes, it's true. We do make civilization, don't we?
