* These are notes I took while watching the first television premiere episode of RUBY on 11/09/08
and I look forward to anyone sharing these notes or views.
I took notes because I wanted to remember all the things I learned about Ruby in her journey and also to take notes to remember things that I learned and things I could Definitely relate to with Ruby ***
Notes continued.....
Taste for Sweets: Ruby shared how she developed a taste for sweets and unhealthy foods, just as an alcoholic graves alcohol.
Weight and Medical Condition: On the series premiere of RUBY, she weighed in at 473.2 lbs and her regular doctor described her condition as a metabolic disaster. It was also shared that either RUBY has diabetes or is a candidate to get diabetes (sorry I forgot which one) and the doctor talked to her about her losing weight and
the possible rammifications not losing weight which may result in :
The possible loss of vision,
possible loss of kidneys,
possible headaches,
possibly having a stroke,
and health wise, currently, she was told by the doctor that healthwise she has and lives the life of a person who "already" had a stroke
NOTE: A few months ago my regular doctor advised me to reduce my carbs dramatically to prevent a medical condition called Diabetes as it runs in my family.... I am still in the transition of learning to eat fresher wholesome foods as opposed to processed foods. My most difficult challenge is letting GO of bread.
Apnea: Ruby was diagnoised with Apnea, which is a loss of air while sleeping usually.
Ruby's doctors advice: if she didnt lose the weight, she could die and that if she wanted a healthy future in life, that "today" is the day you have to start.
Ruby's Determination: Ruby shared how it is time for her to make a change and take care of Ruby.
NOTE: I feel the same way... its time for us to take care of us
Because so many times we are busy with work, paying bills and being someeone's mom, wife, etc.... that we forget to take care of ourselves and we place our health and possibly goals on the back burner. I think it is time for us to put us in the forefront
imho.
Ruby's close friends describe her as: fun, loving and charming. Ruby's friends went on to share that Ruby manipulates her friends to be "enablers". Jim, Ruby's nephew, shared about his relationship with Ruby in this way....how when you love someone, you find yourself getting things for her that she is unable to get it herself.
Ruby describes her rebellion: Ruby shared how she admittedly gets
hateful when her friends say she can't have this or that. For example: Chocolate or a donut.
Cars and seatbealts: Ruby shared how it is hard for her to get in and out of any car. She also shared how she is unable to put a seatbelt around due (due to her size), so she puts it on halfway around her so she can feel like she is obeying the seatbelt law.
Ruby's Love in her past relationship: Ruby shared how she was in love with this guy and he had told her "if you loose thie weight, I will marry you" Then he was gone.
NOTE: When I read that part of RUBY's journey, tears came to my eyes.... I had a similar memory of that happening so I could relate..... sighs. keyword: "similar" as it wasnt a wedding proposal... it was more of a ... well if you lose weight, we can have a relationship and be together.... as if my body was grossing him out
oh well. (shrugs)
Ruby Very Much Protects herself, her romantic dreams and advice to men: Brittany had asked Ruby as they were sitting on a park bench, why Ruby dosent talk to her about guys and Ruby shared openly that she does not allow herself to go there... to the romantic side. Ruby shared how she dreams of being able to sit in someone's lap, and cuddling with the man who is to be in her life in the future. Ruby also shared that she never, ever wants to hear a guy tell her again that irf you lose weight I will marry you. She then looked at the camera and advised men to never tell that to a woman.
NOTE: I looked at the sincerity of Ruby as she spoke and listened to every word and it was like.... oh my goodness.... Ruby is in many ways "me".... I keep men at a distance because I do not want to go thru the rejection again or go thru the emotional termoils of being vulnerable and getting hurt or waiting by the phone or getting disapponted because he didnt call or stood me up, etc. Yep, I think many people can relate to RUBY's feelings and journey.
People gauking and staring at Ruby: Ruby shared how when she is outside in public that people stare at her and laugh at her. (then the camera turned a bit as she was walking and showed a couple taking pictures of Ruby as she walked by).
NOTE: to me, that was kind of sad...sighs. I can't even imagine what she feels like inside to have that happen to her, especially in public. I mean I know how I feel inside when I can't see my feet because my stomach is so far extended or how I feel when I am near a person who weighs much less than me.... but never had people laugh and stare at me... thats why my heart went out to Ruby, sincerely.
Ruby's Attempt to exercise: Ruby shared how her friend Brittany (who was flew out to Ruby's residence for the weekend ) wants to help her with eating healthier and exercising.. had convinced Ruby to at least walk on the treadmill 5 mintues every morning, first thing in the morning. Ruby agreed and also agreed that sometimes her walks will be outside, even when she doesnt feel like it. Ruby also shared her reality that sometimes she dosent want to walk and sometimes her weakened knees and ankles "hurt" by the weight they are carrying and supporting but that she will do the best she can.
Ruby's Trip to the Health Food store: Brittany took Ruby to the health food store to teach her how to shop for healthier foods and to consume/cook healtheir foods. Ruby's concern was showing Brittany how much more expensive it is to shop healthy.
NOTE: I found myself agreeing with RUBY in that regard because people like us who usually ate lots of carbs or are addicted to carbs quickly found out how much cheaper the wrong kinds of carbs are to endulge our cravings of certain foods and that healthier groceries "are" in fact more expensive.... but ya know what? WE are worth that investment and soon it becomes a good habit as I, myself, am learning
The right kinds of carbs for my body for example would be healthier low gyclemic index vegetables, etc.
to be continued............
