Default Best Books/Plans for Active Veggies

Hi Everyone,
I'm brand new here. I've never been a fan of diets (basically because they make me obsessed with food!) but my weight has been creeping for the last few years and I've finally decided to do something about it and I'm pretty sure diet (rather than lack of activity) is my main problem.

It would be good to find a plan I could easily stick to, but there doesn't seem to be too much out there for vegetarians wanting to go low carb. I don't want to go ultra low as I exercise quite a bit (strength work in the gym and long distance running) so I think I might need/get away with a certain amount of carbs. I've read the Atkins book, but it doesn't seem too veggie friendly and I've found that I need to eat more carbs than he recommends to have the energy to exercise. Also, I don't really like the idea of eating lots of cheese - I do eat eggs and dairy products, but no meat or fish.

Any recommendations would be great. I live in the UK and have about 10lbs to lose.

Thanks :-)

I think you would do well on South Beach. It is more lenient with carbs than Atkins, and more veg friendly in general.

Here are some samples of meals that would fit the guidelines for induction:

1. an omelet with loads of veggies
2. cottage cheese with chopped tomato or cucumber
3. unsweetened, FF yogurt or greek yogurt- could add nuts is desired
4. stew made with veggies and beans- or could do a vegetarian chili with quorn or soy, if you eat those things
5. vegetable/ tempeh stirfry

check out the south beach forum on this board- i am sure they can give you lots of advice.

Ji Facingit. I also live in the UK. I am a comitted vegetarian of 25 years. Whist I am not an expert on the subject, my understanding is that your energy comes from fat, NOT carbs so I dont think you should increase your carbs to get more energy. I.E. if you're not getting enough energy then increase your fat intake.

Hi Facing it.

I am a veggie who has recently begun Atkins based on "New Atkins for a New You" which talks specifically about veggie diets.

I also don't have too much to lose and am finding it enjoyable at home but challenging outside - and slow going.

I'd love to hear how you're getting on and perhaps if we can offer each other some support?

Emy

What kinds of challenges- finding what to eat in restaurants? What type of cuisine do you go out for in general?

I am just about to grab some post work-out cottage cheese

For years I was on atkins while being a vegetarian and it just didn't work for me, everybodies different though.

For me personally, I feel I do better when I just stick to eating clean unprocessed foods and not worry so much about the carb count but kept an eye on my calories, make sure I'm eating to my bmi.
I eat alot of vegetables, starchy and non starchy and have fruit.
I also have alot of plain yogurt, nuts and eggs for protein plus 2 tablespoons of coconut oil a day (I make unsweetened coconut bark with almond bits!)
No bars or anything with soy or fake bread foods.. Just clean living.

By far the best choice I've made! Only 2 kilos to go =D

I'm finding Atkins as a veggie so restrictive outside of my home. Last night I went for Chinese with friends and it was a lot of effort to make sure the dish was veggie in the first place (the waiter's English was poor) that by the time I'd dealt with that I didn't feel I could go into questions on corn starch etc. So my dish that sounded ideal came out deep fried like tempeh.

I like to socialise, no specific cuisine, the generic gastro pub type fare (that frequently involves pasta or risotto), italian, thai, mexican, indian etc...

Also, at the moment I am able to take lunch to work but in the future I'll be travelling a lot and staying in hotels. I find that my diet is enough of an issue and I hate coming across as really fussy. Its different with family or close friends but colleagues find it tiresome.

What I'm really wondering is:
I'm going to need to be less rigid and do the best I can to avoid being a recluse. What is the best way to get back to ketosis? Should I avoid high fat for a day or two or go straight for it again? Isn't eating high fat and some carbs counter productive?

Thanks Robin. I'm trying to not be scared of eating out and live my life but stay focussed and do my best.

Any thoughts on what is the best way to deal with a 'not so low carb' night the next day - to get back into ketosis asap and back on track?

Hi everyone,
I'm new here. Have been low-carbing since 1st January this year but lapsed when on holday (walking holiday) for a week. My weight has stayed the same for the last month, so I looked for inspiration and found Rose Elliot's book, The vegetarian low-carb diet. This has saved my life. It is very practical. My only criticism is that she is too much into tofu but there's plenty of other excellent recipes in there and a good plan generally. The new me is counting carbs religiously and after 3 days my weight is going down once more. I don't care if my diet is boring now: I eat almost exactly the same things every day. It was going for nice tasty food that got me to my present weight. I like cooking but am quite happy having an easy life in the kitchen and I intend to cook for the week now and freeze stuff. I also eat lots of fresh uncooked things - salad, nuts etc.
Luckily I have some good vegetarian friends and a good vegetarian restaurant close to where I live. When we go out for a meal, all I have to do is opt out of the dessert. I think that holidays will probably be OK too, since we tend to hire a cottage and cook for ourselves when we go for a countryside break and when we go for a city holiday, there is usually less problem: I just look for the veggie restaurants. I think for the foreseeable future I will just have to avoid eating in friends' homes - I can always invite them out for a meal to a restaurant where I feel safe and know the menu. I am not sure what to do when I reach my goal weight: imagine it will be easier for me to avoid cakes altogether, perhaps allowing myself a cheat day. I hope my experiences are helpful to you too, FacingIt, I certainly have learned a lot from other people.

Zoe Harcombe is a vegetarian herself, she has interesting and excellent posts on her website plus YouTube videos which explain the phases of her diet. Dr John Briffa is a lower carb real food advocate with a new book Escape the Diet Trap but I do not know how well his program can be adapted to vegetarian.

I don't think high fat and SOME carbs is necessarily counter-productive. I've been doing c. 100-113 total carbs and always 20 or fewer "carby" carbs (grains, potatoes etc.) per meal. And this seems to work for me. I've been losing weight. The thing you have to make sure to do is keep your blood sugar low (and therefore your insulin low).

But you have to eat something the morning after, right? So high fat and/or protein is pretty much your only choice, right? Fat is protein-sparing, so I say do some of both and fill up on fat to spare protein.

As for eating out at restaurants, I think Asian places are generally pretty good because most of them usually give you the major carb source (usually rice) separate from the rest of it (tofu, vegetables, fats etc.). So you can just fill up on the tofu/vegetables and eat as much or as little of the rice as you want. And many places will give you brown rice for no extra charge, which will help in keeping it low-GI. Mexican would be a little bit tough. I would probably just get a side order of beans and/or guac and maybe eat a few tortilla chips. I'm having trouble coming up with any other option that wouldn't be pretty carby. Maybe vegetable fajitas (hopefully with beans), but just skip all or most of the tortilla shells. Indian is hit or miss. If they have a good vegetarian spread with dal, chana masala or some other legume-dense option, it can probably work fairly well, but it might not feel all that satisfying.

These are situations where having a good protein powder can be a huge boon. Just fill up on plenty of fat, try to maximize protein and minimize carbs, then drink some protein powder when you get to your car, office, hotel or whatever.
