Default Whey protein

i've have the PP Lifeplan book and after reading it and figuring out my protein requirement for each meal, i know that i won;t be able to eat that much protein per meal.

Would it be all right if i sub whey protein powder for at least half of my protein requirement? Please don;t suggest that i try to gag down all the solid food proteins, it's making me feel sick just to think about it. Don't get me wrong, i love my protein i just can't eat that much of it. (ie) breakfast suggestion: 5 eggs and 2 ounces cheese... i would throw it all back up if i had to eat that much. Could i use 20gm whey protein and have a few boiled eggs to meet the requirement?

thanks for your advice

Deb,

Whey protein is a good source of protein.

Did you calculate you protein requirement correctly? What you list for breakfast seems to be alot of protein (~45 grams).

Deb,

My first question to you would be, What did you eat, typically, before you started the low-carb diet? I am wondering how much, or little, you ate so I have an idea why 5 eggs seems like such an enormous amount. If you eat a typical breakfast of eggs at a restaurant, you would often get two eggs, a sausage patty or 2 -4 links, hash browns, toast, and a drink. That seems about equal to 5 eggs in volume to me.

You do understand that the concern about getting enough protein is because it not is used to build and repair cells, but it is used for the hormones necessary for your body to function. You are trying to rid yourself of the excess fat not the muscles, your heart being one.

I eat a can of sardines for breakfast, 3.75 Oz. for 26 gm. of protein. I probably could eat two cans with out much trouble but I would be full for the rest of the day. Could you add some sort of meat, there is NO reason why you could not have a steak for breakfast. Remember, the "traditional" breakfast was so we would eat all that grain and sugar that the food companies find so cheap to make.

I know a lot of people rely on the protein powders, but I am suspicious of food processors and therefore of "manufactured" food. I would rather eat whole natural foods if I can.

Larry

Deb-

I use whey protein powder for extra protein. I make shakes for post workouts and I use it in ricotta cheese for a dessert and I mix it in my yogurt.

I do try to eat many whole foods but I do love my whey protein powder and it is not something I want to give up.

I just checked the book, and their recommendations regarding a 40-gram portion of eggs are any of the following:
  • 2 whole eggs plus 4 egg whites plus 2 ounces of meat
  • 3 whole eggs plus 6 egg whites
  • 2 whole eggs plus 5 egg whites plus 1 ounce hard cheese
  • 2 whole eggs plus 5 egg whites plus 2 ounces cream cheese
  • 2 whole eggs plus 3 egg whites plus 1/2 cup cottage cheese
  • 2 whole eggs plus 2 egg whites plus 1/2 cup tofu
I've always maintained that eggs are a pretty lousy source of protein, since you have to eat so many of them. And who wants to throw away all those yolks?

If you have to have eggs for breakfast, how about 2 scrambled eggs with maybe a little cheese and a side of sausage?

But why limit yourself to eggs, as Larry pointed out. There are a ton of things you can have without resorting to eggs.

Think of breakfast as an early lunch, if you have to, to get out of the "breakfast means eggs" mindset.

And yes, you can use whey protein here and there, but it's probably best not to rely on it on a regular basis, especially if you're thinking about replacing half of your protein requirement with it.

PS: Also note that a 40-gram portion of regular meat (beef, pork, chicken, fish, etc.) is only 6 ounces. That's not a heck of a lot to eat. A regular chicken breast is about 6 ounces. Surely you can eat a regular chicken breast?

i was just trying to quote from the book from memory; obviously i had it a little wrong but my feeling is still the same.

Quote:
2 whole eggs plus 5 egg whites plus 1 ounce hard cheese
or
Quote:
2 whole eggs plus 4 egg whites plus 2 ounces of meat

it's the volume of that i can't handle...i don't eat much volume wise, i just hang onto every molecule i consume.

I could never figure out why i was fat when i was/am comfortable eating less food volume wise than most people in my family....i get the full feeling very quickly so i usually eat small portions(quite often a plateful of dinner becomes 2 meals for me)...i seem to do better with liquids...hmmmmm

I would say try it then and see how it works for you and in time maybe you could stop taking it all together. I generally do not use whey protein as a meal replacement but as a post workout protein shake, I then will eat breakfast about 1.5 hours later. Everyone is different.

Shouldn't be a problem. I used to do it all the time. I'd put Citrucel in mine, and it ends up tasting like a Creamsicle.

I use UNFLAVORED psyllium husks
that I buy a Trader Joes. Citrucil and
like products are a bit pricy. I get twice
as much or more for the same price when
I buy the unflavored product.

I highly recommend it as a source of fiber.

Works for me.

I have found the absolute
lowest price of Whey Protein
Powder, 80% pure on the Intenet.
The only deal is you have to buy it
in 44 lb bags.

But guess what? I did. And I have
a total of about 60 lbs of whey
protein on hand now that will last
the next 8 or 10 months. See this
link for details: http://tinyurl.com/h6jrd

You have to buy bins that can be
sealed against water and bugs to
store it though, but I consider it a
worthwhile way to 1. Stockpile food
against disasters, and 2. A long term
strategy for lowering food costs on this item.

You shouldn't have to pay more than
$4.00 per lb for the stuff. Search the
Internet for "Whey Protein Powder
+ 5 lb" in Google and you will find
many places that sell it for that or
less.

For extensive information on the
benefits of Whey Protein for fitness,
health and weight reduction, see:
http://www.wheyoflife.org/index.cfm
in the "IN THE NEWS" or "BENEFITS"
links in the purple menu on the left
hand side of the page.

I swear by this stuff and use it in
maintenance. It is filling, gets you
happily through to the next meal
and will keep you lean, fit and
healthy! Good Luck!
