I hope that you find the right balance, Jean. I too am thinking about my priorities. I've got work to do and the weather is getting ideal for doing it. But after what happened to me last fall when my motivation for moving floundered, I consider my "moving" regimen high on the priority list and I want to track it. However, with a shift in priorities I may be reaching my step goals by activities other than walking. I have had times where I felt that my step counter was gaining some sort of control over me. I was getting a little OCD about hitting the steps goal. But now I'm a little more chill about it. I don't mind the nudge that it offers to make me mindful that movement is an important part of my day. Last fall sufficient movement wasn't happening for days and weeks on end. I don't want that to happen again.
