diabetes management classes
Hi, all. I am posting here out of curiosity because my mil, who has been diabetic for well over ten years is finally being sent to a class to learn how to better manage her diabetes. She had mentioned before that her docs had never sent her nor had she looked for one on her own. I don't know if they are expensive and her insurance would only cover it if her doc sent her or just what. Anyway, she recently had knee replacement surgery and of course, her blood sugars went nuts.
I was the main caregiver while she was recuperating and it drove me crazy to see her idea of a diabetic friendly meal. She totally gets the 'no sweets' thing, of course, but she just doesn't comprehend the need to completely avoid bread, pasta and rice. She has been managing her diet based on what she has read and heard from the Diabetes Association.
So, she is now in a class and while they did tell her to count her carbs, they did not tell her how many she should have. Is it common for them to introduce the idea in one class and then help you calculate an individual number, based on your size, age, sex, blood sugar count, etc? That's what my husband suggested to her that they may be doing. I don't know how many are in the class and maybe it will take a lot of time to go through all of them. If anyone else here has been to them, will they teach her a lot of low fat garbage or what? Do their recommended carb counts compare to lc weight loss diets or are they much higher?
