Default UI professor's study shows dieters should seek protein

CHAMPAIGN – Are you trying to lose weight, but constantly hungry and looking for the next snack?

Dieters with snack cravings are often loading up on too many carbs, and would do better and feel full longer by adding more protein, according to Donald Layman, a University of Illinois professor emeritus of nutrition.

In a recent study, Layman found a moderately high-protein diet offers the best chance for losing fat rather than muscle, avoiding the cravings that lead to snacking and reducing chances of getting heart disease and diabetes.

That is funny.

The professor went astray though with his diet recommendations. He recommends far too many carbs. He pushes lean meats. Also his math is wrong. He talks about a 2,000 calorie a day diet and then later about 90 grams of carbs, but carbs are supposed to be 40% of the calories(according to the formula 40c/30p/30f ) but 90 grams of carbs only comes out to 360 calories which is about 18%. Maybe he meant to say, you should get carbs from other sources besides fruits and vegtables, but he didn't say that in his recommendations.

The protein levels (1.6X weight in kilos) work well for me, but just think how much better they might do if they ate less than the so-called "low" 170 grams of carbohydrate.

I wrote about a very similar study on my blog:

A high-protein diet is better than a high-carbohydrate diet for weight loss

First 5 weeks on a low-calorie diet, then 12 weeks on either high-protein or high-carbohydrate. The high-proteiners kept losing weight, while the high-carbers gained back some of the weight they lost.
