Default Difference between these diets?

I'm doing Atkins. I see that there are several different low-carb diets. What is the difference? Which one is the most effective?

Most effective.. most effective for what? Loosing weight, controlling epilepsy, reversing insulin resistance, lightening your wallet, pissing off P.E.T.A, etc...

This might be a place to start looking

Looks like the winner might be... Atkins!

I am doing old school Atkins, but I think you need to find what work best for you, read and look at the different plans, pick one you think you will be able to stick to...

Try looking at "Plans" on the top green menu bar that runs across every page. You'll get a summary there of some the major plans.

Also under the Atkins forum, the question of which ATKINS book has been asked many times. So if by "these" you meant Atkins, not all the dozens of other LC diets, search Atkins sub-forum.

How to search: you must use ADVANCED search, the regular box is disabled, right under search in smaller letters. It defaults to this forum, use the normal Google search qualifiers.

I am still angry at Dr McDougall and the vegan Cancer Project diet that contributed to my weight gain, so thank you for this reason...best ever! I will be using this response to LC push-back

The short answer is to read up on several different low-carb eating approaches, be honest with yourself and see which one would be easiest for you to stick to for life.

This is the most important part. I speak from experience since the first time I went on Atkins was the Summer of '72. Since then, I tried every diet in the known Universe, hoping to find one that kept me thin. Guess what. There's no such thing.

So Barb is right.

First, be honest with yourself. Are you in this for a quick weight loss and then to go back to eating the same way you did before? Been there. Done that. Yo-yo parade.

Easy to stick with: For me that means I don't have to fight hunger. Also, that I don't have to spend my entire day obsessing about food, buying it, preparing it, eating it, cleaning up after.

Stick with it for life: If you find a WOE you can stick with, you will keep your shape, your health and never feel deprived.

Beautifully said, bluesinger! My travels through Diet Land have run a very similar course, and I've reached the same conclusions. I can't count the times I've read "It's not a diet, it's a lifestyle" but ignored it. Now I've finally realized that there's no getting around that part.

Thank you for the input. At this point, I am with Atkins. I am 4 weeks in, the only thing I've changed out of induction is adding nuts, but I'm still at 20 carbs a day.

Starting with DANDR the concept of 'net' carbs was introduced, by 2010 edition, 'net' carbs was required, 15 of which were Foundation vegetables. Earlier Atkins and Dr Westman's clinic trial version of Dr Atkin's clinic plan use 20 Total Carbs. If you are very carb intolerant, staying at 20 total grams works better. Nuts and cheese can derail because they are "morish" and calorie dense, so some personalized versions of the diet remove those. Whatever Atkins book you buy, you need to consider what works for you. Be sure to measure the nuts, the reason they are not included in the Duke clinic plan is the tendency to overeat after one little ounce is gone
