Default Resistance to low-carb diets in UK

Even though the world's first low-carb diet came from the UK in 1862 (see Banting's "Letter on Corpulence" via the low-carber.org) there is still considerable resistance to low carbohydrate diets today. Atkins has a rough time, but does actually get himself heard in America. In Feb 2001, I set up a web-site to promote low-carb diets. It is not a profit-making venture. But the UK has greeted all my attempts to publicise it with a deafening wall of silence! The medical profession here strongly disapprove of low-carb diets, which is historic, and goes all the way back to Banting. Doctors are used in the UK to advise all the national newspapers, the TV and Radio, so all my attempts to report the advantages of low-carb diets in these media have been thwarted by the medical profession, who have a total stranglehold on diets and related issues. The closest I have come to success is with the BBC, who have promised to let me have my say, next time they return to the problems of obesity, and how to cure it. But progress will be slow, and attacked by the medical profession. It would appear that America, for all the aggravation it gives Dr Atkins, does at least have a fairer approach to anyone with different views. In the meantime, if anyone can offer any suggestions about how to publicise low-carbohydrate diets in the UK, I will be very pleased to hear from them.

I am an ex-pat and have been living in the USA for around 12 years now, my home towns in the UK were Birmingham and Monmouth. Do not underestimate the anti-low carb movement in the USA, It is almost impossible to find an "establishment" published article in support of this way of life in the USA. I only discovered it after searching for a cure for hypertension for more than a year, and after going down several blind alleys guided by the medical profession, I refused point blank to take medications and eventually found the low carb way of life.
I have spread the message to many friends but always on an individual person to person basis, and only after I had read nearly all of the published literature in the popular press on the subject of low carbing, diabetes, lipids, syndrome X, etc including of course the Atkins book and the Protein Power books. I have a library of around 30 of these publications.
I have distributed around 20 copies of the Challem book on syndrome X to friends in the UK and I have given out around 10 copies of the Bernstein "Diabetes Solution" I have had some notable converts both here and in the UK by following this approach, and they are all dear friends of mine that I want to see around for many more years.
The greatest success is always with type 2 diabetics who see rapid improvements in symptom reduction the first week that they follow Bernstein.
So in summary my limited success has been a true grass roots approach and never with support from mainstream medicine.

Thank you for your comprehensive reply, and on behalf of low-carb users every where I would like to thank you again for what seem like heroic efforts on behalf of the cause! From what you say, it may be even worse in the USA than in the UK, for this reason: the printed media are "controlled" in the UK by their medical advisers; the national newspapers will not publish anything their advisers deem medically unsound. This gives the medical profession an opportunity to veto any opinions not consistent with the "party" message. On the other hand, this is offset by the broadcast media. The BBC in particular practise a doctrine of "Fairness, Accuracy and Impartiality", which gives dissenting voices the chance to state their case, and persuade people en masse. This takes time, because their programming schedules are planned for many months ahead, and they only return to such topics as ours at given intervals. But, in time, it is possible to challenge received medical wisdom, and offer proofs that low-carbohydrate diets do work, and are only restricted by the medical profession and the diet industry for reasons of protectionism. I admire your persistence, your commitment over many years, and frankly your generosity. Sincere good wishes.
