Default Question about PCOS

All my life I had irregular periods, with cycles ranging from about 35 days to 90 days. I also had awful PMS. However, I had no other symptoms of PCOS except for insulin resistance and weight gain. I got pregnant both times I wanted to without any medical assistance, I don't have any signs of excess male hormones (no facial hair, no hair loss, etc.), and I really don't think I have PCOS. However, I've never understood why I had such irregular periods. Can irregular periods be related to insulin sensitivity without having any other symptoms of PCOS?

Hi Liz,

Irregular periods can be caused by many things. Just because you don't have all the signs of PCOS it does not mean you don't have it. PCOS is a syndrome with no cure, just ways to control it.

Many times the irregularities stem from IR which in turn wreaks havoc with your hormones, creating to many androgens in your body which then in turn messes with the way your ovaries function which can cause you to have no or very few periods.

You may want to try going to an endocrinologist or a doctor who knows and treats PCOS. Get some blood tests done if you can to see what your levels are.
