Default unsweetened Kool Aid

I see a whole bunch of recipes for jello containing unsweetened kool aid. I have only found sugar-free kool aid in the grocery store. It contains aspertame though. Anyone know where to get unsweetened kool aid?

It may only be available in the US but do try asking people at the grocery store if they do or will carry it.

Here's the website for KraftCanada which shows that they have it. So your supermarket should be able to order it.

thanks. I realized not a minute after I posted that I should check out the Kraft Canada site. I have it bookmarked as I used to use recipes all the time. I waiting for them to get back to me on where it's available.

Unsweetened Kool Aid can be bought in the small packets. Priced like 4/$1 or a bit more.

I see it at the local Loblaws.

I checked the pkgs I had in the cupboard, and they don't actually say "unsweetened" on the label. It's just called Kool-aid, and in itty-bitty teensy print down the side, it says
DRINK MIX
ADD SUGAR

The directions on the back state to add 1 cup sugar or sweeten to taste.

It's available everywhere ... That being said, I notice that some stores don't carry it in the winter, only in the warm months. Weird. Larger grocery chains like Loblaws, Superstore, A&P, Safeway etc should have it.

Doreen

I did buy the sugar free kool aid...I figure it has to taste better in jello than those yucky lemon extracts.

So you mean regular Kool Aid in those little packages is what everyone refers to as unsweetened? It has sugar in it though. Is that ok for this diet? I figured that because it had sugar in it, it was not "unsweetened"

Yes, unfortunately the Canadian version has a small amount of sugar added as a filler . Generally less than half the total weight .. I usually count as 2g sugar/carbs for the whole pkg.

The US version does not have added sugar, as far as I know.

Whether or not you "can have" traces of sugar depends on which program and stage/phase you're following. Atkins Induction says to avoid added sugar at all costs .. but even ham, bacon and commercial mayonnaises may have traces of sugar in them. Be sure to count the carbs, and choose those foods less often ... it's better that most of your carbs come from vegetables and salads.

Doreen

Default unsweetened kool aid

I buy mine at IGA - there are lots of flavors there. I can get no name and store brands at different grocery stores as well (but havent used those personally). The stuff in Canada does contain small amounts of maltodextrin but when mixed up it is a very small amount. I use it to make sugar free (aspartame free) jello. There are a few flavors in the US that are completely sugar/carb free. Black Cherry and Lemon-Lime are the two I know off hand I think there are about two or three more. I have no trouble with the ones with maltodextrin it doesnt affect blood sugar or ketones for me (or my son who is on a low carb diet for a medical condition)
