Plan: Atkins

Default This diet isn't working anymore!

So, here's my basic story:
Atkins got me to my goal weight in 2003, which I maintained until this year. Seemingly out of nowhere I put on 3-4 lbs. Then, I gave up completely and put on 5 more.

I did 3 weeks of induction. The first week I lost 7 lbs. The second week I gained 4, lost 3. The third week I gained 4...now I have a net loss of 2 lbs.

To be brutally honest, I don't restrict splenda because it has never stalled me in the past, and I love my coffee.

Here are some things I have done:
  • My fat intake is variable day to day. It isn't consistent.
  • I work out about 3-4x per week. I run, cross-train, and am training for a 5K and 10K.
  • I take: glucosamine/chondritin, a multi, biotin, and omega-3. I recently started back up with supplements (but the re-gain was a few days before I started, it went down, then back up...I don't know if they are the factor. My supplements have no sugar in them.
  • I pretty much cut out caffeine week 3, that didn't help.
  • I tried coconut oil for a few days- saw a dip and a regain.
  • I eat about 1,000 calories per day.
  • I don't always get the amount of vegetables Atkins recommends.
  • I drink my water most days.
  • I *think* my pee smells *funny* (like it should on Atkins).

Have you always worked out like that? I know I stopped losing when I worked out.

Yeah- I pretty much log about 18-24 miles per week. I have noticed difficulty losing while I work out so much. Maybe I will cut it back a bit. I'm not an endurance runner, so it shouldn't hurt me too much. I could easily kill a 5K without training at that level.

What about the daily Atkins shake? Some people report stalls when they have frankenfoods. Maybe cut out the splenda, shake, and any other processed stuff and see if that helps.

Also, you're really close to goal, and weight loss can come to a grinding halt right before the final whoosh. I'm sure some other posters can help you with this. I have never been so close to goal-I usually stall out in the 160s for some reason.

I started out without the atkins shake (which I only have 1/3 of anyway) and stalled before I had any of it. I also tried cutting out soda...didn't work...tried cutting out splenda...didn't work. i've never had a splenda problem before.

Maybe the final whoosh will come...

IMHO, this is the problem.

You're not eating enough for your activity level.

Think like a caveman for a moment: You're expending a hell of a lot of energy (looking for food or running from predators, your body assumes), and there's not a lot of food to be found.

If you were your body, would you let it lose body fat, thinking it's very life is in danger?

You need to eat more, I think.

Just a thought.

Maybe you should take a look at your body fat percentage and take a look in the mirror?

You might just be freaking out over nothing, as it sounds like you are quite fit, and healthy.

Looking at your fitday totals, if they are correct, you are not eating nearly enough. If that is the case, you need to start eating more calories.

I have to second this. Scotchtape, you are 5' 4" tall and weigh less than 120 pounds. You are already well within a healthy weight range for your height and your struggle to lose further with excercise and fairly low calories may just be your body telling you that you are already thin enough.
Looking at your fitday (at least the last week), most days you are well below 1,000 calories if you are recording accurately. You need to eat more at the very minimum.

Your daily caloric intake is scary for someone who works out like you do, or anyone for that matter. I can't imagine your body letting go of anything on a roughly 600 cal./day diet. You have to feed your body. Try eating more healthy foods, not diet soda/splenda concoctions. I think you might find you actually lose weight by eating more, especially protein and high fiber vegs like spinach/brussels sprouts/broccoli/cabbage. I find it much easier to lose when I keep my fiber up with these kinds of vegs. Cleans you right out (tmi?).

I agree with the rest. Eat more. Its seems like your body is hanging on to the food you eat.

Another vote for the fact that you need to eat more food! Your body needs enough protein to repair the damage you do to your muscle cells when you work out! And, as the others said, your body won't let you lose more fat than it considers 'safe'.

In addition, it isn't 2004 anymore. You are 3 years older now than you were then, and the human body can go through a lot of changes over a period of 3 years.

Eat more and see what happens. Many people begin to lose again if they increase the amount of lc veggies they eat.

Seriously... why are you so focussed on a particular number on the scale?

No one on Atkins should be eating less than 1500 calories per day.

You must get your vegetables.

You must drink all your water.

What you're doing isn't really "Atkins"... it's some notion of "Atkins"... and you're probably doing a real number on your metabolism and your overall long term health.

And I don't really remember in the book where it talks about your pee "should" smell funny... so that's another thing I think you've got incorrect.

If you haven't read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, you should. Reading Atkins for Life would be good for you, too.

Your health probably depends on it.
