Default Low carb and kids

I have 3 boys, one of them is very big for his size. I don't want to put him on a diet but would like to start adjusting his eating habits so that his weight doesn't ballon out of control like mine has. My husband thinks I'm nuts.

I'm wondering if anyone has their children following a lower carb diet and/or has links or suggestions for a book for a lower carb diet for children.

Thanks in advance,
A

eating low carb basically means eating whole foods, foods without labels. eat plenty of meats and veggies which is healthy for everyone!

Maybe for a child you would want a more primal approach. There is a site called Mark's Daily Apple, and they basically eat any food that is natural. So lots of vegies and fruits, meats, eggs, nuts, seeds, etc. It's not exactly low carb, just healthy food. I think it's a great approach and that's what I'd be doing if I were a healthy young guy.

What she said. ^^^

Also, we have a LC parenting and pregnancy forum . I'm not sure how active it is, but you might find some good reading about how others have approached this.

Here's one thread that might be helpful.

You don't say how old your son is, but we also have a Student and Teens forum . Again, doesn't look very active, but you might find some helpful reading there.

That's the time to start. Once they hit pre-teen you have much less influence with them.

There is a book called "Feed Your Kids Well" by Fred Pescatore which might be worth reading
http://www.amazon.com/Feed-Your-Kid...y/dp/0471349631

Apparently he worked with Dr Atkins.

I like the healthy whole foods idea. If that doesn,t work as well as you would like I have always thought the Suzzan(sp) Summers would be a healthy way for kids to eat. They can have carbs. but they are restricted to healther limited way of eating. I have kids and when they are complaining about meat and veggies all the time I make a SS meal following the food combining rules found her. My kids are tiny(thier both in the 20%for thier age and hieght) so I keep lots of fruit in the house but your son might need some fruit restrictions to begin with. Your doing so much for him to start him on heathy eating now.

I thinkits alot harder in some ways when they are kids to get them eating lc as they are sooooo influenced by there mates and not many of them are going to be lc.My 17 year old is eating lc and has been since i started and loss alot of weight although she doesnt have to be so strict with it,and has her moments when with friends of ice cream, shes also a veggie...but i think that if they are eating in the main lc then thats a great thing.my 5 year old had some flax bread this morning as we had run out of normal bread and really loved it and has asked for me to make it in the morning again, baby steps, start introducing slowly maybe and see how you go.
