It's probably just a coincidence. Nevertheless, in both instances, it appears to be blatant misuse of the word appetite. To illustrate, the first definition (dictionary.com) of hunger is "a compelling need or desire for food", while the first definition of crave is "to long for; want greatly; desire eagerly: to crave sweets; to crave affection."

Therefore, in both instances, the more correct phrase would be "sugar craving", and "rewire our cravings [for carbs]", respectively.

I agree. Appetite is distorted by carb intake; this was my whole life until I discovered how low carb worked.
