Hi guys...well ive been doing Suzanne Somers as ive mentioned before which is a lot like Dr. S cause thats what SS based herself with her way of eating...i did lose a few inches but no weight which is fine by me...i do walk everyday and if i dont i will get on my bike with hubby and go for a ride at night cause now its getting too hot now during lunch hours...you come back to work all sticky then you have to wash...anyhow, i did read both books and they both make sense for sure but SS books is more realistic...you do eat grains once a while and the best time to eat your carbs is in the mornings so it has time to burn off...and you eat the fruits you want....but at a certain time before or after the main meals...its just a bit different then Dr. S books but not that much...and you dont need to buy her products either...you can do your own and it works just fine...I like her book and men can follow it too..its just as good for them as for women...

Hello All -- I've been crazed with end-of-school (for kids, not me) June madness, but my big reward for feeling somewhat caught up today is to check in with you all. I'm finally figuring out how to navigate the site, and appreciate the webmasters sending reponses when I post. I can see the site is organized by "issue" or subject, and now can see the most recently active subjects are listed at the top. Do I have that right?

Anyway, weight is finally starting to drift off. However, I am also stretching the boundaries of exactly what carbs are permissible under SP. That said, I'll try to regroup, retrench, etc. I continue to feel MUCH BETTER than I have in years. I've also started the process of a thyroid workup. I think someone on this site was explaining what to have tested, which I've now had done by my GP, and will now take to a specialist. I went to a headache doctor about 6 weeks ago who told me if I have even borderline low thyroid (which I do), that would be affecting my weight, sleep, headaches, and just about every other condition I'd written on his form. Will fill in on that as it evolves.

Re Betty and her post a few months ago about corn-fed beef and dairy products -- I have wondered the same thing. SP mentions the issue in passing, but in The Fat Flush Plan, Gittelman goes into it in detail. One stat (I'll try to double check this by the next time I post) was something like that milk from grass-fed cows has 800 times the amount of conjugated linoleac acid as that from corn-fed cows. Really alarming.

Lots more to say, but now family has converged.

Hi, check into "Eat Right 4 Your Type" a blood type diet to use in conjunction with these other diets. Make sure you are eating the proper foods that won't wreak havoc with your metabolism while you are watching your carbs and such.

Whenever I eat something I'm not supposed to for my blood type, I gain weight!! Even if it's low fat/carb, etc. Like chicken and corn! I gain weight and feel awful.

I just started the SP to help with my severly damaged metabolism due to being exposed to many chemicals and extreem stress. My weight is close to where I want to be but I need help with low adrenal function. I paid for an extensive saliva test and found that my cortisol is very low and my other hormones are really out of balance. My Dr suggested TSP and I felt better from the first day! Now to start yoga or something...

But the key to it all is eat the foods that are within my blood type allow list AND according to TSP.

I am new to this forum and have never posted before, so not sure if I am doing it right.

I am also new to SP - still learning. I really appreciate everyone's experience and practical advice. I find it very helpful looking at Betty's journal to see some specific ideas of how one person is applying the plan day to day.

Thank you all.

openheart, thanks for your encouragement about my journal. It's a lot of rambling (Which helps me I suppose). But that it helps other is an encouragement to ME.

I hope you are doing well on your plan! You can stop by and post in my journal anytime, and you can start your own. I just posted on a thread in the SP forum about preparing ahead your foods. You might check that out!

Hey, stick with it!!! You can do it. You have 20 pounds to lose according to your own stats, and that can be off permanently in less than a year. LESS THAN A YEAR! Can you imagine that?! A little sacrifice now will yield and BRAND NEW YOU!

Default Interesting thread

Hi, I'm kind of new here, which means I used to hang around here, but gradually drifted and when I began Schwartzbein I wanted to talk to other people who do this. Sounds like there hasn't been huge activity, but I hope there will be some. I agree with all those who feel frustrated because there is no such thing as fast progress on this diet, but considering that I have just spent 55 years getting myself into this fix through up-and-down gaining, losing, weird diets, starving and binging, to say nothing of my adventures with sugar, it doesn't seem realistic that I could immediately lose all this weight as I was able to in my 20s. That knowledge doesn't make it any easier, but here are a few things that does: I've been sick and tired of being sick and tired for at least 7 years now, and after two weeks on this diet, I started to feel like a new person. It's cool that I don't have to be hungry, and what's coolest of all is that it makes me feel enough better that I find I don't WANT to goof off. Occasionally I will have "a moment," and eat something sinful, but on Weight Watchers and the like, that would always start a landslide. Here, it tastes good, but feeling good tastes better, and I find it's not that hard to go back to the straight and narrow. I lost some 17 pounds right off the bat, and now I haven't lost any for weeks...but I'm keeping the faith and working on getting off the artificial sweetners, which I now see I'm addicted to, and I continue to feel better. I'm pretty sick with fibromyalgia and severe arthritis, and getting some kind of exercise program going is difficult....but it seems to me that if it takes me five years to get well, it's still going to be worth it. So hello to you all, and please do write sometimes. http://forum.lowcarber.org/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=6759126#

Welcome to the SPP and the low carb forum. Although I am following Whole Foods with a SPP influence. I agree with you - - it is a great principle to follow and a program of feel good changes.

You don't see tons of action here... mainly because most people create a journal and then support and visiting from people happens that way. That is why you don't see a whole lot under this SPP header.... look for us whole fooders in our journals. I have found that the more supportive I am of others, the better the supporters are of me and come visit my journal in return. It's one of those things that the more you put into it the more you get from it

You can create one journal.. and as you go visiting others, you will see them come visit you.... in fact, I started by visiting many people and asked them to stop by.

So click on the lower right hand journal icon within this post and you can come visit my journal... and anyone who posts there have a journal icon too. Once you create a journal.... it will automatically post inside your replies and postings everywhere you go.... it is fun, supportive and a great way to build friendships. Again, WELCOME!

Heres the link: http://forum.lowcarber.org/forumdisplay.php?f=36 - - click on new thread to start your own journal. The very first posting is a STICKY NOTE that when you click on it, it will explain creating journals and the rules surrounding them. Hope to see you around!

Eklutna, Congrats on finding a new way to maintain health in eating whole foods!

I encourage you to heed the advise of Renee, to start a journal. It will help you and others track your progress, and allows others to encourage you!

I'm not sure what book of the Schwarz Doctor you are readin, but I found the latest one, I think it's called THE PROGRAM, to be the most well rounded and understandable.

I highly advise not reading the second book, as it's a MESS and a lot of work on stuff that doesn't matter, such as body types and all that crap.

Truth is, eating whole foods and walking WILL cause you to lose weight. Why? Well its simple, eating whole foods over time eliminates the cravings for crappy foods and halps curb appetite naturally b/c you are eating what your body requires.

This in turn causes you to eat less over time, forsaking the desire to gorge and snack. You pretty much, after sticking to it for a while, will naturally stop when you are full. Why? Because your body HEALS with the whole foods!

I hope you will start a journal and stick with it. Remember, you don't HAVE to give up everything all at once, but you MUST focus on eating whole foods and MOVING and eating normal portions as you can. This is the key!

Best wishes for a successful way of life! You can do it! I'm proof!

I also have fibromyalgia and severe rheumatoid arthritis. This way of eating makes me feel better than any way I've ever done before. It's so worth the effort and makes me feel good that I"m doing what I can to heal and prevent further illness.

Hello, Hello, there are several of us that are just kind of starting out. TheBetty is a great help. She suggested I go to her journal, and start reading. I learned a lot and she has really affected me (which I mention in my journal as a thank you). I am getting to know Grannyscat and Glad2beme. I think we are all about the same age and same starting place.

I haven't quite figured out about posting yet. I know if I go to journal at the very top right of the banner, that takes me to my own journal and I can see if anyone has posted to me.

That if I am reading a post, and I click on journal of the person I am reading, it posts to their journal. If I click on post quick reply, it posts to where I am reading at the moment. Is that right?
I do hope that those of us who are doing SP will stick together, there really aren't very many of us and I find in reading threads that so many people are on other programs. So, by all means...WELCOME!

I bought the 1st 3 books and followed TSP for a few months some years ago, and it seemed to help, but had a few major crises all at once so I didn't do anything regularly for a long time. Now things are stabilized and I already know a lot about what to do, so it's easier to get started this time around. TSP was recommended to me by someone who had major success and still follows it, years later.

With the crises and all, I know my adrenals are burned out but luckily am not a candidate for diabetes or anything like that. I've lost weight doing other things before, but I know this time I need to heal a lot. So I hope to find information and inspiration here.

I'm grateful for those of you who have put in the time and effort to share your experiences, and I'll be looking for those jounals and websites I've seen mentioned.

And I'm going to pick up the latest book today. I can't get tested via Schwarzbein's website (NY residents can't), so I'll look into other ways to get the right tests done.

Hi Trinity,

Welcome to a 'resumed' way of life. I hope the stressors won't prevent you from taking care of your body this time around--stress is easier to handle if you are healthy.

Eating well and letting your body heal naturally should equip you to get through those times with minimal health issues--you don't need adrenal testing. Dr. S makes money testing and selling supplements. But eating whole foods and moving will do for you what her tests can't--make you healthy naturally!

Keeping your house stocked with ONLY whole foods will eliminate bad choices when you are home. Avoiding eating out until you are comfortable making good choices from the menu will help your efforts considerably.

What will the tests do for you that eating whole foods and walking daily won't?

Maybe it's best to just focus on eating whole foods, moving your body and letting it heal and lose the weight naturally and not worrying about getting tested for adrenal issues. After all, eating the whole foods is what will set your body straight.

Something to think about. Best wishes to you for a successful WEIGH of life! --Betty

Thanks for the welcome. What I can offer in return is taking the time to write down some things I have been thinking while reading other posts about this forum FWIW

There aren't any EZ answers or short-term results, that's for sure. But many of us have looked at or followed other plans and come to the conclusion that this is the sanest, for us, and the one that is most likely to serve us for the rest of our lives. So it's worth figuring out how to do it.

Everyone has different values and stresses and amounts of money and time to spend on themselves, and some people don't have the freedom to do what they want with respect to their food. There are many variables that change from person to person, or even for the same person from day to day. This is not a plan with lots of built-in support systems, that's true. And sometime "really doing this" means you spend a lot of time shopping and preparing and packing food and washing mountains of dishes and little travel containers, so you (I) can't post as much as I might.

It's just my opinion, but I don't think the lack of activity here is a reflection on the people who have posted here, or the people who haven't, or the plan. At all. I've done similar plans, more strict, with more group support in the past and that IS easier in some ways. But I'm here because I know this is healthier, and can be adapted as new medical information comes out. These are just plain sound ideas.

I have been brought up in a crazy world, in a country that I love but is pretty nutty with respect to food. So of course it takes some effort to change my behavior and to see how things I've been told would make me happy, like carbs and fake food, really were (sorry folks) taught to me by the food industry. Apples and peanut butter and broccoli do not have advertising campaigns, so it's in no one's financial interest for me to follow this plan. And for those who didn't read my earlier post: I can't even help make Dr. Schwarzbein rich--NY State residents can't get tested through her office.

I am really lazy and would like to think about other things, but the more I find out and the more I implement what's recommended, the better I feel physically and the better I look. I still can't give up coffee entirely and and also put in a good day at work but according to Dr. S, that's right where I'm supposed to be, for now. I have a number of other things that make me cranky as I fuel my body differently and don't give in to emotional eating. But it's a journey worth taking. It's better than being being a zombie because I ate too many potato chips, or devastated because I developed diabetes or depressed because I went to my grave 100 lbs overweight and missed out on so many things I didn't have the courage to do.

I have to pay a little more attention to my feelings, and not mix up my emotional reactions to things with the actual reactions my body has to what I put in it. For example: as a Southerner, I may always want fried stuff and feel irritable if I decide not to have it. That doesn't mean I should think my body would work better with lots of french fries. What I call feeling good is sometimes actually not feeling at all. What I call "feeling good" or "feeling bad" comes from all kinds of things that aren't related to reality.

I was an athlete most of my life, so I know how it is to feel fit and healthy and happy. I'm sad that I lost that, and that changing yourself for the better is often hard. For people who have always been overweight or in poor health or never happy (for whatever reason), it must be even harder. You have to have faith that health, well-being, and physical happiness can be yours too. I've seen women who changed their eating habits to something like this plan, and they positively glow when they are actually pretty old. They're happy. They probably weren't too happy in the transition, and I know it wasn't easy for them to carry food supplies on vacations and long trips, etc. But we all do the best we can. This plan is, IMHO, the best I can do, and I'm glad to find even this level of support for the Schwarzbein suggestions.

Welcome to everyone, by the way, and welcome to me (I'm new too).

Greetings all! Brand new to the board and soooo excited to find others that follow The Schwarzbein Principle. I just wanted to share my story and get encouragement and tips from others. I actually started TSP the first time in 2000. I followed it religiously, shopping every day at a health food store on the way home from work and preparing everything fresh. It took a great deal of time. As many people have mentioned (and it does say this in the book) I did not loose weight for at least several months. During that time I did however notice other changes. My skin, hair and nails were looking great, I had much more energy, my mood was better and I was sleeping through the night. I hadn't done that for at least 10 yrs. The interesting thing was that people who saw me infrequently started asking me if I was loosing weight. Since I wasn't I didn't really notice but my body was actually getting stronger, had more muscle tone and looked much better. I was surprised by this because I wasnt really exercising since I had a rather physical job. Well, since my initial success I have moved, (nowhere near a health food store), got breast cancer and have been dealing with that and had an injury which resuled in two herniated discs. Between the tamoxifen (a pill form of chemotherapy breast cancer patients are often on for 5 yrs. after the initial treatment), and the steroids they put me on for the herniated discs I have ballooned up in weight and am very unhappy. The drugs make it extremely difficult to loose weight so I have decided to go back on TSP because I really do believe in it as a way of life. So I'm cleaning out my cupboards and frige, re-reading the book and preparing to start TSP for the second and final time. It takes a great deal of patience and effort but as she says you didn't get unhealthy in a day, it took years, you can't expect to get healthy quickly either. (Definately not a direct quote but you get the idea). So I hope to hear more from you all and get tips for fitting this great way of eating into this crazy life that we all lead.
