Default Too few people on statins!!

"Most people around the globe with high cholesterol are not getting the treatment they need, claims the largest ever study of 147m people.

High levels of the blood fat are linked with cardiovascular disease, the world's biggest killer, which takes 17m lives a year.

The report in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization says too few people are put on cholesterol-lowering drugs."

This article was featured on the BBC website this a.m.

I'm crying for those pharmaceutical companies right now -- if only they could get the entire population on statins the world would be a better place ')

Hmmm... I don't suppose whoever wrote that release has a lot of stock in statin manufacturers?

These are from Healthy Skeptic.

I know most readers here can predict what he says but if anyone doesn't quite get the tone of katmeyster's and Nancy's posts listen to these.

Sickening.

From the forum's main page, the title of this thread looked like, "Too few people on..." and I knew it was going to be "statins." Just sickening.

And there were recent articles showing that statins are not effective for primary prevention. Who cares what the data says. Big pharma has to keep its profits up.

If by high levels of blood fat they meant triglycerides, they'd be correct. But it doesn't seem that's what they meant.

my dad had a heart attack about a year ago.. he had no cholesterol problems, had quit smoking for a number of years and the only risk factor I knew of was his gut (not overly large either!) and yet he was put on statins and no matter how much information I provide to him, he won't stop taking them

Well, for what it's worth, at least he's in the only demographic for which statins have been demonstrated to show reduced risk - men with a previous heart attack.

Ohnoes! My brain is full of cholesterol. It insulates all my nerves. It creates my hormones and lets me absorb fat soluble vitamins.

I know, I'll take a drug that screws up this whole system.

There's can't be any downside to THAT, she said sarcastically.
