Hi folks,
I have been adding in a few treats - a chocolate ice cream, a small bread roll - here and there while trying to steady the ship and keep portion sizes down. I don't intermittently fast as such but I don't always eat between 20.00 at night and 12.00 next day. I sometimes feel (emotionally) deprived but never hungry. I just ate half a delicious chocolate chip muffin someone brought to work this morning. It was good but actually not as good as I imagined. Nearly every time I eat baked goods I get that feeling, so maybe I shall go back to cutting them out altogether. Weightwise, I'm holding steady just but at about 2 kg over where I'd like to see the top of my weight range. With Christmas coming up, I need to stay on top of things. At least the ice creams will be less tempting in winter!! :-)

It's a very fine line we tread between not feeling deprived and not overdoing it. Or even worse being taken over by it! I probably eat like you Lulumae! Deprivation, or what feels like it, and the thought of lifetime restriction sets me up for a fall. I hope we all find a way that works for us individually both mentally and weight wise.

Thanks. I hope it works in the long run, as that's the point, as I've always regained. And yes, it did work for my liver. Enzymes were well within normal 3 months later.

I was so amazed that I managed to lose all that weight (17 kg or so, which was a life changer for me) with low carb and it didn't seem that tough, but once I got close to goal it got very hard. Pounds started to creep back after a couple of years and now I just can't get into that mode again. I am getting a bit fed up of my meals repertoire and more or less alternating meat and fish with some kind of veg. My girls - who live in the house but don't eat with us are both vegetarians, and I'm starting to feel a bit bad about all the poor animals I eat. I miss the pasta dishes that I used to love preparing. My husband joined me on the low carb woe but he's trying to be gluten free as he says it really makes a difference to him. To me, it doesn't seem to make that much difference. There are some types of bread - toasted ciabatta and springy brown bread full of grains - that I love. I have decided to have a slice of buttered toast for breakfast some days, as my gluten free crispbreads are very dull. If I stick with low carb for the rest of the day, maybe that will be doable. It's all about tweaking :-) I haven't tried any pasta for ages but one day I might just have a plate of spaghetti alio olio, to see if it's as good as I remember. I'll make it a special occasion though. I had better stop there or they'll throw me off the forum! Seriously though, I think low carb is a fantastic way to lose weight. For those who can embrace it totally, it's probably a great way to keep it off too. But sometimes it feels a hard row to hoe. :-)

When I want pasta, I used black bean spaghetti. I've been getting it on Amazon, but it's a lot cheaper on Netrition: https://www.netrition.com/explore_a..._spaghetti.html

Their serving size is large, in my experience, so consider the net carbs to be less. The first time I made it, I weighed it into their serving size and it was about 3 servings. It's extremely filling. To me, the taste is neutral and the texture is good, if you don't overcook it. It is grey, however.

I purchased this pasta recently, but haven't tried it yet: https://www2.netrition.com/thinslim...impastable.html I'm not particularly sensitive to gluten either, but I know if I start eating bread or other wheat products daily, then I will just eat more and more.

When I make pasta, I use the shirataki noodles. It works well and takes on the taste of the sauce used. Generally I make it with chicken pad thai and peanut sauce, which is really yummy!
I find it at Walmart so no need to special order.

I rarely prepare pasta because DH isn't really into it, so when I do, it's real pasta. I eat a much smaller portion than I used to eat and make sure to have protein and fat with it...meatballs and cheese. It's over and done with for several months.

I also have diabetes to consider, which helps me watch my carbs. Bread and bread products are my biggest problem. It's best if I don't eat any, because one bite just makes me want more and more. Fortunately, I have no interest at all in sweets. I would take a second helping of my food before I'd ever head for dessert.

I make it for my husband too. He loves it and its fast and easy. Just make sure to drain it properly or it is way to runny. Lately I haven't been making it because I'm eating every food that I have denied myself while strict LC. Now I eat what I like during a one-hour meal before 3pm and then nothing but water the rest of the night. I've hit a stall the past two weeks, so I may have to tweak it a little.

I am doing lower-carb for my diabetes, but I am also the main care giver for my mom and she wants everything that is just full o carbs and gets really upset when I try to get her on a lower-carb diet. I am also on insulin, so I also have to factor that in.

I would fit in to this category (Keeping carbs around 60-70) Are there many currently on the board doing the same?

JessAus, I think this forum in mostly people doing Atkins, Keto and the like. Very few eating many carbs. That's why there is this thread for Semi Low Carb.

I have cut my carbs very low this past week. I do it as often as I can, but am not good at it long term. I am getting very good blood sugar readings this week because of it, though. There is a message there.........

Thank you for that SilverEm - I have never heard of SBD before. (Is it an American WOE?) I would say I sit somewhere in the middle between Atkins and SBD + I naturally IF everyday ~20/4. I added up the carbs I am eating over the last couple of days out of curiosity and I am consuming about 40-50g, a bit lower than I thought. A few of those coming from dry wine

Hi, JessAus. I don't know much about the South Beach Diet. Yes, I think it is American.

Dr. Atkins' plan increases carbs as one gets closer to goal. It's only the Induction (beginning stage) that is very low carb.

There are other plans which are not so low. Barry Groves' Eat Fat and Get Thin.
Dr. Wolfgang Lutz' Life Without Bread.
Dr. Jan Kwasniewski's Optimal Diet

I don't know of any active threads for those plans just now.

Best wishes to you.

I just saw my comment from October 2017. It's true I didn't eat so much ice cream in winter. However, since early this year I've been struggling to say under 73 kg. That's way up on my nearest-to-goal of 64-65 which I briefly reached two or three years ago on LC.
I've never been strict about drinking and I don't really think I was ever THAT strict about carbs but somehow I lost my way some time last year or even at the end of the year before when I think I was hovering around 69-70 kg. Now I am eating as close to cave man as I can cope with - meat, fish, some non starchy veg (I guess caveman didn't have too many of those), less dairy (I love cheese - yes, I know that came in with the Neolithic) and no grains. I can't say I'm 100% sugar free as I drink wine and eat 90% chocolate in small amounts. Still, I'm finding my interests in food waning, which is a good sign in my case as I have a strong emotional bond with food. Unfortunately, it is probably cyclical but I run with it for now. There's still some dissonance about my low carb diet that really does seem to be the only thing that keeps me from blowing up like a balloon and the part of me that feels that bread and pasta and things, in their wholemeal form at least, OUGHT to be healthy even though I know they are not.
