I'm a morning person so as soon as I drop my son off for school I hit the gym. It's empty and I have it all to myself. I turn on the TV and work out then go home in time to get ready for the rest of my day. I agree, it jumpstarts my metabolism and gets me going for the day!

I've read in numerous places that its better to exercise in the morning b/c your burning up stored fat rather than fat you ate before you went to the gym. Therefore, i do cardio in the morning and in the evening's i lift weights.

I don't mind when I exercise as long as it gets done! I prefer first thing in the AM but it's not always feasible. The only thing that is a must for me is an empty belly.

Diana, you would enjoy our place:-) We have a residential gym and a pool - free and open 24/7.
From my computer desk and kitchen window I can see both. They are occupied from 4 AM to 2 AM. I saw 1 AM cardio as much as 4 AM weight training. Meanwhile during the 6 years we have been living here I have not found any connection between the time of exercise and the amount of gained muscle/lost lbs - but there seems to be a direct connection between result and consistency:-)))

The thing I like about going first thing in the morning (6:45) is that by the time I really wake up, I'm in the middle of my routine.
And when it's 8 am, I'm finished. I think 8:05 is my happiest time of day, because I don't have to go to the gym again for another two days.
(Not a natural athlete).

Cardio is best done in the AM before you eat to burn fat stores for energy. Circuit is best done in the afternoon to give your muscles some protein to burn for energy and recovery

I would like to workout in the morning. However, I wake up so early for work I just don't have time. I work out in the evening. It helps me with stress, so that's a good thing.

I exercise in the morning on an empty stomach....I feel energized the rest of the day and I sleep better. I've tried a few times to exercise in the evening...for me it just doesn't feel right.

i can't seems to wake up in time in the evenings (not unheard of for my alarm to go off 45min or more before it wakes me up!! and i won't even get into how i use three alarms so i don't shut them off in my sleep!) to have time to workout before i have to go to work so i workout when i get home

Depends what kind of exercise -

For fatburning, AM empty is probably best.

For muscle gain, PM after eating all day is better.

But the best time is whatever time you WILL do it.

That's interesting to know, Built..

I answered morning, but really it doesn't have anything to do with weight loss or muscle gain. For me, I just really like going through the day knowing that I've already nailed the workout. Plus, I feel better after a workout. I'd rather enjoy that good feeling during the course of the day than in my sleep when I won't really be aware of it...

A guy at work said that strength training is better at night... is this true?

IMHO, it is - you have more glycogen built up from eating all day. Since the fat-burning from weightlifting happens AFTER you lift, not during (for the most part), it makes sense to take advantage of as much energy as possible to do the muscle-damaging work that is weightlifting, and then rest and sleep while your body heals the damage and grows new muscle (the metabolism-boosting part).

However, this advantage is NOT enormous. If you simply CANNOT do your weights at night, do 'em when you CAN.
